Title: The latest Mods!!
Post by Baz on Jan 14th, 2006, 12:10am
Decided to upgrade the incar entertainment system in my Scorpio after the DVD failed on the way to Euro Disney in December. (Thankfully the video still worked so little Connor was happy!!)

I managed to get hold of a system from a galaxy which included headrest screens, dvd player and control box along with headphones, remotes and most of the wiring. The Galaxy system allows two rear seat passengers to watch 2 seperate sources of video or for 1 to play a playstation game even!

I aquired the missing bits from the local dealer and proceeded to rip the galaxy headrests apart to fit the screens into a spare pair of Scorpio ones I had.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0654Small.jpg

The Scorpio headrest is dismantled to leave just the casing

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0653Small.jpg

After all of the foam and material is ripped off the galaxy ones, this is what is left!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF0631Small.jpg

Stuff it inside the scorpio headrest and cut a hole in the back. Then the foam is removed from under the leather and the leather is superglued into place around the face of the screen holder

Matching pair

Close up.

This weekend if fitting the wiring in time....watch this space!!

How are you? and a Happy New Year to you

Thanks Barry, Happy New Year to you and yours :)

Years since I went to the pictures.

Fast and furious start to the year and the only chance to get on the site seems to be after midnight.

Of to Scotland next week, Aberdeen and then Edinburgh. Thinking about a guess the mileage competition at Harewood, (nice bottle of malt for the lucky winner) with proceeds to Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Bleeping nicely they are!

Noticed that you are starting to build up a supply of HBCs at the Warrington Parts Distribution Centre.

If you get any that you know are shot, can you put them on one side and I want to see if it may be possible to do something with work on the heat sink, other thing is I would like to open one up to see the innards.

What do you think we might find, a handful of resistors?

I will check the ones I have (4 I think at last count) (didn't you take one too? You are welcome to any that are broken!

Looking very good !!!!!!!!

I cheated like Craig and bought the ready made ones but unfortunately they are made of a different leather and therefore won't have that custom look like yours will  8)

mike...
i was going to mention the exact same thing, could of saved a bit of labour, mine are still working a treat,BUT do agree that the "proper" scorpio ones are a lot more comfortable, and do look the part......
(do enjoy driving at night with the screens working in the back though, not only do they give off a subtle glow, but always get the looks 8)).......

now i know what your doing this weekend baz, that will explain your lack of time of in replying to that mesage about the roof/window deflectors.. ;)

OK,

First take a perfectly good centre console and cut a rectangle out of the back with a jigsaw!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0696Small.jpg

Remove the waste plastic:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0697Small.jpg

Fill with "entertainment system" control panel from Galaxy:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0698Small.jpg

Then cut a perfectly good hole in the top of you leather drivers seat....

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0699Small.jpg

Remove the excess foam and superglue socket adapter in place....

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0700Small.jpg

Shove long piece of stiff wire down through the seat (I have an old CB whip ariel for this purpose, works a treat.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0701Small.jpg

Pull headrest wiring loom through the hole and snap socket into place in the adapter installed earlier

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0702Small.jpg

The headrest can now be installed with tyhe plug into the socket and the rubber cover stretched over the oval collar. The headrest can also be removed if the seats need to be fully reclined and there are two blanking covers to go over the sockets in the seats.

Repeat for passenger side and watch out for those side airbags!!

Verry nice work Baz  :o

I'm also modding my electronics a bit. I want to install a desktop computer in my trunk so it will run OBD, mp3, DVD, GPS, and various other software/devices.

Title: Re: The latest Mods!!
Post by Baz on Jan 20th, 2006, 9:13pm
You can get a 1DIN in dash PC now which will do most of that. It combines with a touch screen on the dash to produce a nice piece of kit!!

Title: Re: The latest Mods!!
Post by Baz on Jan 20th, 2006, 9:14pm
All in place....and I even hoovered up!!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0712Small.jpg

Centre Console view. This has facility to operate the volume and input selection for each screen. The AV lead goes to the boot to my video and TV units which are a left over from the original install and are also remote operated from inside the car. You can plug a playstation into this and one person can watch TV while the other plays a game or dvd or video!!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0714Small.jpg

Startup screen lets you select inputs and adjust stuff!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0715Small.jpg

Chicken Run.....
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0717Small.jpg

Outside view. As the headrests are genuine Scorpio ones, they can still be tilted and raised as normal
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/DSCF0718Small.jpg

This is a lot better install than the original as the screens are a lot bigger and easier to control. Having the dual input option is just an added bonus. The whole upgrade will end up costing less than £150.00 as I have had some offers on the screens and video/dvd which was uninstalled.....

Absolutely blooming superb!!

Looks like a professional job........, having said that wired up or networked any interesting buildings lately 8) ?

So what programme will the Westbrok Odeon be showing at Harewood? ;D

Title: Re: The latest Mods!!

Thanks for the comments....next mod is the rear high level brake lights and then a front screen to knit in with the new system. I got the video working so maybe one of those nice digital freeview boxes!!

As for buildings, just done a massive new building for Johnsons the cleaners in Buckingham and got to do 20 factories around the UK before August. New Town House you will know Geoff, thats having a makeover and umpteen schools. Still trying to find out if Midland Expressway Ltd. is bidding for the new toll motorway to Manchester seeing as we cabled the M6 Birmingham one!

We will have to have a cuppa soon, give me a call when you are up this way again

Very professional finish Baz -
most impressive

I too am contemplating with a screen at the front. I can't decide yet which road to take?
Don't fancy a screen not built in but the normal single DIN DVD players with their pop out out screens may be a problem with the Scorps' dash layout so here's one that I am seriously considering that may solve all the problems only it's a tad small visually.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a207/uib/jvcdvd.jpg

The other thing is it would mean me having to change the dash to the earlier Scorpio one with the single din and shelf, I don't fanacy the adapter plate.  Also it would mean losing the VNR and returning back to a TOM TOM  :'(  still at least then we would be up todate  ;)

Please keep us all updated with all that you do, it's extremely interesting & fascinating  :)

hi mike

you could use a CA 1601 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/scorpio_man/scorpio%20bits/itemcdpallinone.jpgfrom.....http://www.tgincar.co.uk/

or kenwood do one, but cost big style (£1k+) :(

Hi Scorpio-man
Thanks - have seen this unit previously but not wishing to sound dumb here, having never actually checked this out, but was it not once said that the radio aparture was actually 1.8 DIN and not double din.  ???
Another thing that crossed my mind is that should heaven-forbid anything go wrong with unit what is the aftersales guarantee like, after all, who makes it  ???
Still, it most certainly does the look the part and the screen does open the correct way for the Scorp's dash  :-/  hmmm

As for the Kenwood, £1K+ .....yelp  :-X

Cheers
Mike

hi mike

you're right, the size is 1.8 but you only need to trim it a bit to fit.

best to give them a phone about the guarantee :)

they're not that far away from me, i must try and pop in one day. ;)

absolute load of rubbish if you ask me....
lonesumcajun bought that exact same model for the front of his scorpio, pig to fit,and as for the guarantee, well wait for his reply, made in china (says it all),ok when it was fitted and running properly the picture/sound quality was good, but he did have a lot of problems with the first unit which was exchanged (eventually),only fo the 2nd one to do exactly the same,no doubt when he sees this he will reply on the subject...

nice work Baz.....just make sure you fit the leather hoods available from Ford over the head rests at night to keep the thievin scum at bay......

I've just ordered a brand new 2.2 TDCI Titanium X 155 bhp Mondy Estate which has the multi media installed and has the monitors in the headrests....and it comes with these leather hoods.....very good idea.....

and don't worry, I'm still keeping the saloon...I'm trading the estate !

Title: Re: The latest Mods!!
Post by Baz on Jan 23rd, 2006, 8:32pm
Thanks Simon.

The Ford hoods don't work with these headrests because the shape is all wrong. I have some leather look elasticated ones which fit perfectly. Doesn't really need them though as it has black windows and the screens are black against black headrests.

I am looking at another car but seeing as the wife has just got her fancy megane CC, I am limited to looking at a MKI Granada Coupe on EBay!! Mind you, better that that a skoda!

Like these Mike. These ones are out of a Mondeo so have a little more shape than the square type galaxy ones. I had a bid on these but the bidding got to £80 odd quid which doesn't sound much, but there were no other bits, so no wiring (system has about 6 wiring looms each costing from 25-55 quid, the control box is over £200 and the dvd player is a mad price too. Unless you get all the bits in one auction like I did, it can be expensive. I just wanted these as spares as I still have some galaxy headrests with screens in but they are cloth. The video I have is on EBay at the moment but again needs wiring looms to connect it up to the ford system

Everyday you educate me a little more Baz...great stuff  8)

I am currently using two headrest covers in a leatherette/netting material donated by my sister from an old seat cover set she had, but I fancied the idea of these real leather ones. The mondeo ones look good  but with these ones I am using (despite the damages) being elasticated they fit snug and don't look so much like covers as I think the Ford ones might.  :-/
(Don't forget I have the same headrest monitors as Craig)

Cheers

Bob,

the filth haven't stopped me at all as yet and I took it all the way to the South of France in the summer and up and down the country since. The front ones aren't as dark as they look. I had it done at the same time as I had two of my vans done (back doors blanked out) so it was all on one bill!! Probably about £200 or so

Barrie,

they are the ones from a Galaxy...about 6 or 7". The whole headrest is off a galaxy, just with a hollowed out leather one from a Scorpio fitted over, trimmed and glued!

that system you have been looking at (and posted the link to) will fit,the headrest screens come pre installed in a set of headrests,as do the sun visor monitors....
the headrest screens in question are currently in my car,i think mike also has the same....
