Title: How safe is the Scorp?
Post by leftofcentre on Feb 12th, 2006, 8:35pm
Just having a mess on the net and came accross the following....

Anyone from here?  Sincerely hope not.  Must have been pretty bad to penetrate the huge bonnet of the Scorp.      :(

Of course they could be Grandad Scorpios! ;D

Some articles on my website if you want to read - one compares with 3 other cars of the time! here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dave.neale/index.htm)

Well looking at the three examples it only goes to confirm

1 Bodymass has a huge effect on survivability and one going head to head with a Jeep Cherokee is probably an unfortunate situation to be in and in the case you point out sadly lethal.  (The disadvantage with the Jeep is that it will probably fall over if entering a bend to quickly)

2 Cars are potentially lethal places to be in if you end up in a river. (Tragically in this case)

3 Having the front end of your car on a level crossing when a train passes at 80 is probably going to be worrying.

"As I approached the line, I stopped and looked, and saw the train was already on top of me. It was about 50 yards away when I first saw it and I had no chance of reversing or doing anything.

"I just sat there and hoped it would miss me. It wasn't until I climbed out of the car that it started to register.

If that had been say a Metro we would probably not be reading his words.

So the Scorpio has a number of active safety features in terms of handling, steering and braking and passive safety (waiting in case we should need them)in terms of construction door bars, airbags, pretensioners, fuel injection cut out etc.,

In occupant terms being belted up in a bigger safety shell with weight and protection is likely to improve surviveability over a big slice of the other stuff around.

BTW it also means that we have a responsibility to drive as safely as we can because if we hit the Metro at speed......... or a pedestrian.

Lets be careful out there

When I read that second post about the river I felt rather ill thinking about it. :-/ How sad is that a hole family wiped out.
I wonder why they couldnt get out. I thought the doors still could be opened from inside even when electric is of?

Doors can be opened as long the inside and out side pressure can be equalised, normal best advice is to first try to open a window. The car apparently was upside down in the water and the doors may have been obstructed.

The other thing is that you need an occupant with the physical strength to open the door and who is capable, if the lady who was driving was injured or rendered unconscious  in the initial impact with the water then she may not have been able to.

By the way judging from the tail light it was a mk3, not that it would make a difference to the outcome cars and deep water do not mix!

Im not planning on jumping into a river in my car. However it may be wise to keep them glass brakers in the car. Somewhere out the eyes of people walking bye.
Incase of a accident.

Very good point Derek.

I seem to remember that Britax used to do one that included a cutter for seat belts.

The Scorpio    is   very  safe,     it's the loony  drivers  behind the wheel  that kill people. :-[
