1979  Ford Cortina  lV,    it    remains the   "newest"  car I've ever bought !

Bought it in 1982 when it was  3 years  old,    £2190.     By 1986 it was a rust  bucket with  only  60K on the clock.

It seems  we were prepared  to accept  poor  value for money back then, with a 7 year old car failing an MOT on  serious corrosion.

               Good Old Days ?  :-/

                      I think Not

wow memories eh !

In 1984 when I passed my driving test, my dad bought me a Ford Cortina Mk4 1.6 L
I ran that for a year then bought a Cortina 1.6 GL MK5, which I replaced with a 2.1 pinto running twin 40s ha ha through 1.6 runninng gear!!!!
When I was 20, I bought a Ford Capri 2.0 Ghia in silver. Nice and comfy car.
I inherited quite a bit of wonga when I was 21, so splashed out on a Ford Capri 2.8 injection. Blue over silver, god I loved that car. The year was 1988, I met the love of my life, now the wife.
I also ran a Bedford CF van 2.3, for fun, no real reason.
I part x'd the capri for a 1 year old Ford Sierra Sapphire 2.0 Ghia auto. Lovely car. Had it a year, and some oink nicked it. So I ran a mini ?? 850 until the insurance coughed up and bought a Rover 825 Sterling, because on the test drive at 110, it changed down into 3rd on kickdown !!!
I sold the van to fund my obsession with Rover SD1s, and bought a C reg 2.6 VDP and built a 3.9 V8 to go in it. I then was given by an elderly neighbour, a Rover SD1 2.6 VDP on E reg, with 11000 miles on, at 75, he was hanging up his driving gloves. He had owned it from new.
I then bought a 6 month old Ford Scorpio 2.3 Ghia in 1997 and still have that car today, along with a Ford Scorpio 2.3 Ultima estate, Ford Fiesta RS1800, Ford Fiesta XR2i, (with a 2.0 zetec mondeo engine in), and the E reg Rover SD1.
Thank heavens for Admiral multicar policy, all 4 of my cars are on the road, the Rover is in long term storage.
And the wife, I have just bought her a Fiesta ST150, brand new in red. Shes Ford through and through as well.
Looking through my photo album, I have also had K reg Mondeo 2.0 Ghia
Granada estate GLX K reg
Granada Scorpio eastate J reg
Granada saloon 2.0 H reg
a couple of Mk3 fiestas, bought and sold and a Mk1 Capri.
Ohh not forgatting Pugsley, Pugeot 206cc 2.0 SE 02 plate bought for last summer to pose with roof down, now p/x'd for St150.

Been all Ford's for my short car history.

First car was a 1987 2.4 V6 Granada Scorpio, which I got for free from my dad. Had that one until I "parked" it slightly off the road one winter. That wrecked the steering and front suspension, and the cost of fixing was higher than the car's value.
I then got the 1995 2.0 16v Scorpio Saloon, which I drive now.

Wonder what car I'll get to replace the Scorpio when that time comes, as I have a strong preference to rear wheel drive, and european Fords doesn't come with RWD any more.

My first motor was a 1.1 fiesta, did the boy racer thing with a body kit and loud pipe and painted it what I thought at the time was a cool shade of yellow looking back it was probably bloody awfull.
Got a job as a trainee mechanic and one of the guys helped me fit a 1.6cvh with twin 45 webbers  1 weak later banana shaped around a tree :'(
Should have listened to that old mechanic who said "what about the brakes son"
Got an orion and salvaged the good parts and guess what There was some yellow paint left over so it got put on.
Next came a carlton 3.0gsi at 20 years old £1750 insurance :o
I once got stopped and the first thing out of the coppers mouth was does your dad know your out in his car?
I replied no officer
I had to sit in the back of his car while he whent over mine with a fine toothed comb
When he eventualy did a vehicle check and asked me my name and d.o.b he got very frustrated  and said why didnt I say it was my car when I asked
To which I pionted out the fact he asked if my dad was aware I was out in his car not who's car was I driving.
Got watched for months after that.
Had a few bikes after that and then came the best car I ever owned my saphie cosworth which got nicked  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Messed around with a few inferior motors for a while
Then came the second best motor I ever had and you only get one guess what that is ;D ;D ;D

Learnt in a Mk1 Cortina and Mk1 Escort, poles apart.

First I owned was a Mk1 Capri 1600 XL Tawny metallic lovely colour and so much Dynaglaze polish if you dropped a duster on the middle of the roof it would slide off.

Then a Mk2 Cortina 1300 (dont ask)

Then a company Mk3 Escort, followed by a MkV Cortina 1600 Ghia then a 2 litre Sierra Estate Ghia
Mk 3 2.0GL  Granada Hatch and now my Scorp the last two have been real pleasures but the Scorp has probably given me more £££££££pain than the Granada. However it is the best drive so far just done Southampton to Castleford in a gentle 5.5 hours and still fresh as a daisy ;D

Well I started out getting ripped right off with a mk2 escort saloon which had to be scrapped just after i bought it lol then bought a mk2 escort estate in a lovely fetching (i've just thrown up last nights vindaloo) beige, did some funny things to that one i can tell you like putting uprated leaf springs on it so it sat up at the back end, don't as k me why? ? ? ?

Then came the 1st mk4, 2 door red cortina but sadly that got written off (ahem)

After that it was a blue mk4, 2 door, which, like bertie, i stuck a 2.1 pinto in, with a nice set of twin webers.

Then the sierra xr4x4 2.8i in diamond white, lovely car, wish i still had it and of course up to date with the scorps

regards

Paul

am i the only oldie here i had two ford 100e,s three speed side valve with air operated windscreen wipers that stoped if you went up a hill!! mind you never made it up many hills so it was not much of a problem !!!

Title: Re: Your First FORD
Post by Thunderchild on Mar 26th, 2006, 1:34pm
No you ain't... I had one as well. It was my third car and a lovely blue in colour, reg 6221 JH, how much would that be worth today? BTW the wipers were vacuum operated not air which is why they slowed down as you went uphill. Always a laugh lifting off for a second and having them fly back and forth only to slow down to a stop again. Happy days!!

Post by ricky on Mar 26th, 2006, 2:37pm
do you remember when you used to to lift of the throttle, wicth wasnt very often , and the wipers went mad ;;

Title: Re: Your First FORD
Post by Thunderchild on Mar 27th, 2006, 9:09am
Oh yes and the engine wasn't the strongest either. I replaced the big end bearings on mine twice and in the end had to scrap it because the engine was shot completely. Considered putting a 105e engine in it but left home and joined the Army before I got round to it.

Had a whole stack of different makes after that but eventually came back to Ford with the Sierra 4x4 2.8 and then the 2.9's. I had four of them. After that it was the Scorpio and I had the last one for 8 years. Fantastic cars which is why I have another!!

A 1980 Festa Mk1 Festival. Loved the car. Bought from auction with only 38k on the clock (genuine) and only went to the scrappy in the sky after it had clocked up over 140k, and yes every single one of those miles was driven at full throttle(which wasn't that fast in reality!!). Then onto a few capri's, xr3i's, then company motors (all fords by choice) before the scorp boat I now run.

In 1984 I bought a 1979 Mk III Cortina.  It was a rare 2 door coupe finished in Daytona Yellow fitted with a lousy 1300 engine.

Being the boy racer I was back then promptly blew the engine than bought a 1600 GT engine out of a Capri with stage 2 engine mods (Capri was a write off from a local breakers).  Had to change the electrics over from dynamo to alternator type but the car flew with that engine, it had twin webers too.

After that I had a 1600GXL MK III Cortina then a 2000E.  These were followed by a MK II Granada 2.8i Ghia.

I didn't own anymore Fords for some time after that, went all GM!  Had two Vauxhall 3.0 Senators and then some American vehicles mixed in with company cars.

This going to make me feel really old, because only a couple have as old as this - - but here goes.

A 100E Ford Prefect, bought from the FMD i was a sixteen yr old apprentice at (J Ashall & Sons, St Helens)
which was then followed by a 1300cc Classic.
moved up to Anglias too numerous to recall individually.
and then Wow I went all modern and bought a 1966 Ford Cortina Mk1.
Since then had Mk2's, Mk3's, Mk4's and mk5's.
an Escort, Mk4 Granada, and a Sierra Ghia. an  XR3i
and a long gap until I bought my Granada Scorpio. And finally my current girlfriend the Ultima.

In amongst all these were a liberal sprinkling of minis, cars and vans, an Austin Cambridge, Hillman Hunters, a Hillman Super Minx (lovely motor it was), Datsun 120Y 3 or 4 Volvo 3 series, 2 Metros, A Renault 25 and a Hyundai Stellar (it was half a Ford) a Primera, a Bedford CF, cuddly toy, set of doors.

Enough is enough but must have missed some out along the way.
Bren

1977 MK4 Cortina estate. Bought it in 1985 for £150 (only eight years old & already a rust bucket). Beige paint with tan vinyl roof. Sprayed it matt black (wheels as well) on a Sunday afternoon (I was bored) with six cans of matt black from halfords.
Pulled up by the boys in blue a day later, they checked it over (more than they do nowadays), and although they couldn't find anything wrong with it they compared it to something out of Mad Max.
Who says the police have no humour?

A cortina 1.6 20 years ago (God that went quick  :o ) and it was my first car - loved it.

My dad also gave me a cortina estate with LPG he no longer wanted - I had it about 6 months and knew it was past it when the gear stick came away in my hand  }{ luckily only in 2nd (trying to get to 3rd  ::) )and 400 yds from home

then just before the Scorp, 2 mk3 hatchback Granadas - lovely cars but not a patch on this one  8)

1977 'S' reg 1.6 Cortina. What a shed :-/, locked the keys inside the car once, annoyed with the situation I slammed my hand on the roof only to watch in disbelief the rear passenger window slide down enough to get my arm in to unlock the door, ahh the memories ;D ;D.
