Title: Jeep Grand Cherokee - Outta My Way !!
Post by lonesomecajun on May 5th, 2006, 4:15pm
I had the opportunity of having a gander and a quick go in Craigs new car.

As most of you know Craig has had to put his gorgeous Ultima up for sale due to health reasons, you can see it here if anyone is looking for a really, really nice 2.3 that has been cherished -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4636234285&ssPageName=STRK:MEBI:IT

He bought himself a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 not really my cup of tea but I have to admit the interior is a match for the Scorp, lovely soft comfy leather seats, more gadgets than even the Ultima has - how about auto dimming drivers wing mirror as well as an auto dimming rear view mirror. On board computer has so many settings and info screens it could keep you amused for hours.

He was kind enough to let me have a quick blast in it and I have to admit it was fun, alright it'll fall over if you try to attack a bend in it like you would in your Scorp but I was impressed with the acceleration off the line - in fact I'd say it was slightly quicker than his 2.3 up to 60.

There's a certain satisfaction from driving a huge great american behemoth of a car really fast up behind someone, Craig assures me he never drives like this, but he would imagine it would scare people out of the way if he did.

Thanks for the ride my friend and I hope you enjoy your new toy - if you can get the keys from the wife that is..

I was driving the works Toyota Avensis today - it's an old hack of a car with about 168K miles (on a Y-reg!) with a 1.8 engine.  Having said that, it has a fair turn of speed and will probably push 130mph.  Not only that but it does nearly 40mpg if gentle and has air-con, computer and sat nav.  Did make me wonder what the attraction of a Cossie is, though the Scorpio (or even the old Granada) is a much more comfortable cruiser over any distance...

mmmm avensis / scorpio, I like to feel what I am driving & give some input, not just sit there & feel remote.

yeh, just boaring to drive, they have made you so remote from the road that you may as well sit in the back. (wasnt it like that in the adverts when they launched it)

I'm not convinced.  We've had a gearbox die on one of our fleet in the first year or so, four have had replacement engines and there are numerous minor faults such as broken plastics, sat nav thingy not reading CDs, heater stuck on one position, etc.  Bear in mind the oldest is less than 5yrs from new (the one I had with 165K) and it's unlikely we'll be buying any more.  In it's favour though are that Toyota replaced the engines FOC, and gearbox under warranty.  Also these are pool cars so nobody looks after them at all.  They hardly get washed, never hoovered, usually have one or two bulbs blown and the sales people wait until the red 'aladdins lamp' comes on before they check the oil level (if they even know how).  Needless to say, I would let any of them near mine!

my favourite little gimmick?
easy seat entry,it has 2 drivers settings for the remote entry, but when you take the key out,the drivers seat goes back about 4 inches to make getting out easier as well 8) 8)...
still not a scorpio, but in our opinion a worthy replacement.. ;)
