Title: Braveheart Post by jonnycab on May 14th, 2006, 11:24pm Although historically incorrect...this film kinda makes me ashamed to be English. On the plus side...although born in England, I am not inherently English. Both my great Grandfathers were German, so that's okay. No.. hang on a minute....thats even worse....... I give up :-X |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by Bren_K30 on May 15th, 2006, 12:41am I wouldn't worry too much about historical inaccuracy, after all it was made in Hollywood. Look what they did with historical accuracy in the film *___________________ . *at this place insert the name of ANY film made in Hollywood that in ANY WAY borders on a theme that is either 1. True 2. Historic 3. Any other reason Bren |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by Baz on May 15th, 2006, 1:13am apparently according to the film U571, the americans captured an enigma machine first and in pearl harbour, the Japanese wern't quite so bad after all!! |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by Bren_K30 on May 15th, 2006, 1:22am Is that the enigma machine they still use to write George W's speeches with ;D ;D |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by mr._floppy on May 15th, 2006, 12:56pm Don't diss the yanks too much, they did save our raggedy bottoms in 1944/5, without them D - Day couldn't have happened. |
||
Title: Re: Braveheart Post by Bren_K30 on May 15th, 2006, 1:17pm I don't think anyone mistakes "real yanks" with hollywood people. After all compare the actual events to the Audie Murphy, John Wayne versions of the same events. |

The scots I've met have been friendly (though I've heard horror stories of englishmen staying in some areas where they aren't liked) - but the cabbies at Edingburgh airport keep screwing me over when they take me from the airport to city centre (definitely not taking the quickest route - I checked with my sat nav)... Title: Re: Braveheart Post by mr._floppy on May 15th, 2006, 8:17pm WHAT ! Scottish Cabbies not taking the most direct route ? ....... you don't say. I think you'll find that's the first thing cabbies learn, all over the world from New York to New Camden, they're robbing us all. Licensed Highway Robbers the lot 'o them 8) |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by jonnycab on May 15th, 2006, 9:33pm Do you mind Mr Floppy...I'm a cabbie & thats how I earn my living. I am a licenced Hackney Carriage driver, I own my own vehicle so all servicing, fuel, insurance etc is down to me. I don't rip people off, I charge what the meter says & the meter is set by the local council (licencing authority). I always go the shortest route & if out of town I ask what way people would like to go. It is an honest living. Mr Floppy how can you deny anyone earning a living......the fact is that Taxi's are effectively a chaffeur driven vehicle. They pick you up where you are & drop you at your front door & the condition that you are in doesn't matter. I suggest that if you hate Taxi's so much then use public transport...or you could always drive home after a skinfull !!!! |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by mr._floppy on May 15th, 2006, 9:56pm .....and after riding in their overpriced smelly mobile skips they expect a bliddy tip as well !!!! I'm only jesting jonnycab ;D |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by jonnycab on May 15th, 2006, 10:11pm I felt quite offended Mr Floppy.....but all is forgiven....you can travel in my overpriced, smelly, mobile skip of a Scorpio any time you want. |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by tintin on May 15th, 2006, 10:21pm ps i travel from near edinburgh airport through town most days, dont take a route any sat nav would dream up ! i dread to think what it would take you through..... |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by sector-9 on May 15th, 2006, 10:30pm Put it this way, the bus back was faster and more direct! |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by jonnycab on May 15th, 2006, 10:57pm Am I the only honest cabbie in the world?....I must be in the wrong job!!! Talking of Sat Nav....on a recent local news program they tested out a Sat Nav system in London. In a one mile stretch it told them to turn down a one way street the wrong way, do a U turn at the next lights when it was sign posted 'no U turn', & the GPS made them sit in a traffic jam for 40 mins. Once saw a program about how they do Sat Nav road mapping...& all it is, is two people in a car driving 'round all day & clocking the best routes to go. Also heard of a story of a small village in Wiltshire where the Sat Nav directed all vehicles (even HGV's) through a farm yard. Not convinced I need it yet. |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by Bren_K30 on May 15th, 2006, 11:12pm After 22 years of driving taxis I moved on to driving coaches. These jobs may well make you a pretty good judge of human behaviour, but they will never make you a pretty big fan of the same. This thread has wandered a long way from Braveheart hasn't it. Bren |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by jonnycab on May 15th, 2006, 11:27pm Point taken Bren...it has wandered slightly...but thats how disscussions go...start on one subject..end on another.....it could go on forever |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by invernessguy on May 17th, 2006, 1:35am honest SCOTTISH cabbie here, to bring the thread back on track!! I too try to make an honest living, i dont try to take the long way round, and if i have to take a detour, i will explain to my passengers why im going that way.... Yes i have sat nav, but nornally the only time i use it is to get the hell out of england as quickly as possible!!! donnie |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by Highlander on May 17th, 2006, 7:38am Shhh you'll have them talking about 1966 next!! ;) |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by sector-9 on May 17th, 2006, 10:45pm The trick with sat nav is knowing when to obey it and when to ignore it! ;D I only use mine in city centres - most other places I can get to from memory or road signs. Darren |
||
Title: Re: Braveheart Post by jonnycab on May 18th, 2006, 12:17am Road signs....now there's a thing. Most road signs tend to direct you the long way 'round, so to avoid villages.. It makes me remember when there used to be a road sign at the top of Billericay High Street that said "Chelmsford...9 miles". It now says "Chelmsford...10 miles". Must be something to do with tectonic plates!! Sorry gone off on a different tangent again! |

Title: Re: Braveheart Post by sector-9 on May 18th, 2006, 9:29pm You might not be too far from the truth. Newcastle is now a few miles further from Nottingham than it was last year! Of course, neither city has moved but they've played about with the A1 at Ferrybridge and it now runs parallel to the M62 before skirting around the opposite side of the power station (to what it did) before rejoining the original road. The side effects of this are: 1) anywhere on the A1 north of ferrybridge is now about 3-4 miles extra travelling 2) sat nav hasn't a b****dy clue where you are! Darren |
