Title: Why Wasps
Post by monghad on May 27th, 2006, 7:23am
What do they do other than cause mayhem and sheer blind panic. After being stung years ago whilst waiting for a train in Dalmeny Station these things have me on the run. Devil Incarnate I tell you, every b****y one of them.
Anybody like to take the stand in defence of these flying b****rs. If they could be trained the sale in dobermans and rotties would sink(no offence to them, the dogs I mean) ;D ???.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_wasp

This common and widespread wasp collects insects including caterpillars to feed to its larvae, and is therefore generally beneficial.  ;)

Wasps are the insect equivalent of hoodies.
You try & steer clear of them but they get you when you're not looking & often in large numbers.

They're not that hard to avoid. They generally tend to fly towards bright lights, so if one is trapped inside, all you need to do is make the room dark and open a window. Works every time.

That said, I do really hate it when they come too close. Been stung more than once.

Ah, yes. Always fun to take an (almost empty, wouldn't waste a full one ;)) glass bottle of beer and let the wasps have a go. They seem to fly so nicely afterwards  ;D

My father in law once swallowed a wasp (not for a laugh!) whilst yawning. It stung the back of his tongue as it went down. His tongue swoll up within a matter of minutes to the point where he could hardly breath. Ambulance turned up & gave him oxygen & an injection to subdue the swelling.
As for the wasp...the old gastric acid probably made him suffer a lot more.  ;D

Is a wasp sting worse  than a bee sting? I remember catching a bee in my hands for a bet when I was young and encourageable, it never stung me, but the thought of doing such a thing now gives me the heebies.

Bees are usually less agressive atleast. Don't know which is worse, but bees only use their sting for protection while wasps are predators.

Ive been stung a few times, and when my daughter was two she was innocently sat in her push chair when one came along and stung her on the knee for no aparent reason. ever since then I wont tollerate them near me or the family.
When in the house the hoover comes out and I point the tube in their general direction. Bye bye wasp. I have also been known to attract them with jam etc on a saucer and when a few have gathered go fetch the BBQ lighter fluid.
I would be most interested in any other fun and inventive ways of making these little b'stds suffer

Maplin sell small 'tennis racquets' that are actually high-voltage insect grids.  Pop a couple of batteries in them and swat the insect and it should zap 'em!

I'm told bee stings are worse than wasps, but they only sting if they have to as it is fatal to them (the 'sting' is harpoon shaped so doesn't come out once it's in - they tear themselves in half as they try to escape, leaving the stinger behind still pumping venom).  Incidentally, if you do get stung by a bee you should flick the stinger out - don't try grabbing it otherwise you'll just pump all the venom in in one go (I used to be in St. John ambulance)...

Only bumble bees leave their stinger in & die as a result. Honey bees as far as I know can sting more than once but are a lot less aggresive than wasps.

Wrong way around Honey ( domestic bees) Leave their sting in and wasps and some other bees do not and can sting many times
Quote:
Once certain species of bees have inserted their stinger, the bees are unable to pull it out (using a similar principle to a fish hook which is easy to get into flesh but difficult to pull out).

The bee literally tears itself away leaving the sting still connected to the venom sac which continues to pump venom into the victim for up to a minute from the time of insertion. The need for a bee sting to be removed as soon as possible is therefore evident! The poor old bee meanwhile has left part of its body behind and dies as a result.

The bee is different to the wasp in that the more aggressive bee species will usually die after stinging its victim. These bees would typically be the honey bee and the Africanized bee and it is these species that commonly sting and leave their barbed stinger behind in the victim. It should once again be noted that bees are generally far less aggressive than wasps and will usually only attack if their nests are seen to be under threat or in desparate circumstances - like being stood on! I am sure that if honey came from wasps, "wasp keeping"would not be the popular and valued hobby and industry that bee keeping has become today!

Other bees such as the bumble bee and the carpenter bee are different. These bees' stingers are actually quite smooth - like wasps - and so the sting usually does not get caught in the vicitm.

Some bees are even less of a threat to man and their stings are unable to even pierce the human skin. The mining bees which you see in lawns are an example of such bees.

Yep got to admit I dont realy mind bees as they usually can be pursueded to go away but wasps absolutely possitivly must be hounded down and sucked into the hoover or die in any way that comes to hand. I have chased them with a blow torch a few times. and even put my lighter in front of the wd40 and let rip in the general direction of the little b'stds.
one word of warning this is generaly unsafe and do not do it in the garden when the missus has the washing out :-[ :-[ :-[
oh did I pay dearly for that litle bit of acting before thinking :o

We have these over here in Estonia (or similar big ones).
They actually are not too bad. They quite calm and dont attack you for no reason. A few years back I had a nest of them in the attic, no problems what so ever. Its cool to look at them from inside the house when they are climbing on the window.
