Title: head scratching on a Clio problem Post by Bren_K30 on Jun 11th, 2006, 1:38pm Any members knowledgeable about clio problems, apart from it being a Renault, that may suggest a way forward on this one . . . . . The car is a 1.2 16v and after normal usage the car doesn't start intermittently. Example - today a drive of about 10/15 miles and a 10 minute stop , the car started ok. Drove another 2/3 miles and parked again, 30 mins later it's a non starter. The symptoms when it won't start are as if the starter motor has stuck, engaged with the flywheel ring gear, as the old inertia type starters used to do. A short tow sometimes starts the car and, according to the driver, a light which I take to be an engine management warning is lit up. However today after towing the car for a considerable distance it did start but would only rev at v high revs, it now will not start at all and the battery appears completely drained. To me it does initially suggest a collapsed battery, but the car was also very low on oil. but it's not siezed. (Is there a low oil level warning protection sensor on this engine?) Currently it's parked here and I am leaving it to try later because it has in the past started hours later and ran normally until the fault re-appears. |

Sometimes it suffers a power loss when driving and ? misfire that results in only being able to keep momentum at about 2000 rpm, accompanied by a different warning light lit - from the description the light is the same symbol as for the glow plugs on a diesel. But obviously on this petrol model the same is used for a different function. Waiting for the handbook to decipher her "girly" descriptions of technical matters. It's an uphill struggle when she talks about a light on the dash that looks like a helicopter. - - - Symbol of engine with fan. Horrible thought as I write this..... I've lent them my 2.0L .... ;D |

Title: Re: head scratching on a Clio problem Post by Matt on Jun 11th, 2006, 7:50pm lol may be an ecu or a fuleing problem, im not up on the newer clios as mine was a mk 1, simple is reliable it all cases with that car (and they were built like tanks - crashed it into a fiat, which was undrivable afterwards while the clio was damaged, it drove off no problem, didnt even pull on the steering!) there is a clio tuning company called k-tech, they mainly turn clios into fast little beast but they do have a play with engines, mabe they could help you link : http://www.k-tecracing.com/ |

Title: Re: head scratching on a Clio problem Post by scorpioghia on Jun 12th, 2006, 12:17am if the oil level is very low there is a fail safe to stop the engine going bang check the oil level and fill it up and try again or if you know anyone local with a scan tool that normally picks up faults with just the ignition lights on |

Title: Re: head scratching on a Clio problem Post by Bren_K30 on Jun 13th, 2006, 12:08am To keep you updated on this it appears , initially, that a common fault on the Clio (and I have found it on this one) is the tamperproof cover for the ECU works loose and damages the loom where it comes out of the module, causing problems like I have detailed. Does this sound familiar to us or what??? |

Yesterday my son came and I was showing him the damage and explaining about the cover - - - "and the cover won't come off" grabbed hold of it to show him where it was loose and I lifted it straight off with two fingers. Threw jump leads on and tried it without the wiring shorting and lo and behold it fired up. Ran like a bag of spanners but I can sort that bit out easy now. Don't you just love it when mechanical bits make you look stupid. |
