Title: Newbie
Post by Voorhees on Jun 27th, 2006, 9:39am
Hi there.

Im new here and new to Scorpios.

I bought a 96 2.9 12v V6 at the weekend. I couldnt believe how much stuff was in this car. For what I paid for it it really is a beast.

Heres some pictures of my Scorpio and my Calibra V6:

First of I will explain about the Calibra. Which also is a great little car. The oil cooler went on me forcing all the oil into the water, which is now fixed, but sods law now the gearbox is leaking so its of road for a few tweaks.

The Scorpio everything works perfect apart from the fuel gauge can read wrong at times. But from searching around I found out it could be the sender on the fuel tank. I couldnt believe how smooth these cars are.

Welcome to the site  :)

You are right, there isn't much to rival the Scorpio for the money!

(That Calibra is pretty nice though too  ;))

The 2.9 12v is a good choice as they are generally regarded as being relatively trouble free and DIY is totally viable  :)

Another welcome to you. You'll find the site a mine of information.

You've got the same model as me! Same colour, same year , and same engine.

I read that you've got a prob with your fuel gauge. I had the same problem. Probably nothing to do with the fuel sender. With the ignition on (doesn't seem to matter if the car's running or not), press, and hold in, the button under your speedo until it chimes. Then press it about 12 times and it will run through various settings. Eventually, it will come back to the speedo reading.
When you've done this, turn the ignition off, and then on again.
All the needles on the dash will jump around, and then settle. With a bit of luck you will have a fuel gauge reading true again.
If it reverts to a faulty reading, don't worry. we did this about 10 times over the course of about 6 weeks, and it eventually stayed OK.

If you want to read more about this, then look at this:

But I'd have a go at what I've suggested first. It's quick, and it's worked for us.

Enjoy the car. Welcome  :)

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Spannerdemon thanks for the info, but it seems that button doesnt work on mine. It doesnt even the reset miles covered in a single trip. Its strange though cause when I picked it up I pressed the button to see how many miles it was till we got home.

Very strange indeed.

This is the button which is actually part of the speedo unit, (like the trip reset on most other cars) and you need to keep it pressed for about 10/15 secs sometimes. Should work eventually. You MUST have the ignition lights on for it to work.

You can get the info for your journey from the MODE unit which is about where your right knee will be when driving. Keep pressing the reset button to change the info on your trip computer which is in your tacho unit.

Hope you sort it. :)
