I have a 97 P auto Ultima Estate, 138k, I am the 3rd owner and it's just sailed through the MOT (Hard to believe I know!)

In 30 months it's cost me 4 tyres, air con fix (buss box) and recharge, gearbox cooler pipes, 2 services and new front discs and pads.

Apart from it's fuel consumption the only thing that (mildly and I say that quietly in case she hears me!) disappoints is her perfomance off the line. I'm not talking F1 standards here but sometimes pulling away seems slow as though she's suffering fuel starvation then she's up and at em for no obvious reason

Two questions I guess. 1) Is there anything I should be checking re takeoff and 2) Do I just have to accept that I don't have a cossie!!!?

Do I need to experience a 2.9 to get the true scorpio feeling?????!!!! I get the feeling there's "the Scorpio" and then there's the 2.9!!

I think that's a general trait of an auto gearbox - the torque converter has to get a lot of fluid to spin faster before you feel the effect. It takes a lot of engine power to overcome the inertia of the oil which is where the 2.9 has the advantage. If you've ever filled a bucket with water and tried spinning the bucket you'll notice the water has to 'catch up' with it. Torque converters aren't quite so lethargic due to the design of their insides but fluid physics are still an issue...

A Scorpio is a heavy car, it's never gonna be very quick off the line.

My 2.3 isn't exactly F1 off the lights but when doing...say 30mph in sport mode & I kick it down it does give a very reasonable response :)

i have a 2.3 manual and with it being manual is a lot better off the mark but like stated in previous posts not F1 standard but has enough power for me and my lead foot ::) ::)

I've got the 2.9 12v which I find brilliant. Lots of power, and quite easy to service.
Not as good for towing as my old Volvo 940Turbo (which was manual), but for comfort, goodies and looks, I'm more than happy. I tend to drive mine quite sensibly (up to 110mph ;D) because I'm an old fart but that pays for itself in reliability.
I've had several people make some very nice comments about the car, and ask me what sort of car it is, because as you probably know, when the Scorpio came out it wasn't that well received by the (blind) motoring press. Now it's very much in style.
When I tell them it only cost me a grand, they are even more jealous :D

Don't what you mean by torque convertor lag !!!

An auto will beat a manual from a standing start every time , for the first few yards anyway ::)

When the lights turn green my humble 2 lt Scorp can be half a car length away before these spotty baseball hatted fast johnnies get their tiny ( and tinny ) Vauxhall Corsa clutches engaged. :-*

Ahh yes, but the torque converter is still transmitting drive even when you're sat idling at the lights, hence having to keep the brakes on. There's more to it than that but I don't think it is the problem the OP is having - that could be related to the EGR valve which can cause the same symptoms.

I can't comment on the 2.3 but my previous car was a Rover 800 Vitesse Sport, slightly fettled and proven 200bhp at last rolling road day, ok 12v 2.9 is down on power and torque, but it suprised me just how well the V6 with autobox pulled :D I'm sure the 24v would be a closer call however, and I'd love to have a play with one, perhaps get the old Vitty round too to have a good comparison :D Overall, in the short time and distance I've owned the Scorpio, it's impressed me no end :D :D (and thats from a hardened Rover fanatic!)

I wanted a Vitesse myself - unfortunately my insurance co. just fell about laughing as soon as I mentioned the turbo.

Mind you, the Vitesse should be capable of keeping up with the Cossie (I think) - it's a lighter car and not as wide. Unfortunately it's also not as smooth over bumps...

Also the Rover will be far more likely to haemorrage oil all over your driveway and blow its head gasket.

My 2.9 12v was very lethargic until I serviced it and fitted new plugs. No reps in Passats can catch me now! I reckon I could get the hearse to do donuts if I had the space.

During my spell in hospital, and out of action due to a knee repleacment, my mate who owns a 2 year Rover 75
volunteered to take my 2.3 ultima for Its MOT.

He had a good run in it as he had to take two trips due to it failing.
He has now fell out with his Rover 75, his words were
"mine is like a tin can compared to yours and in the Rover I feel every bump the Scorpio rides them, he also remarked on how quite the engine was"
Don`t think I will be swapping!!

Ahhhhh theres nothing like the sound of the cossi engine opening up.Its better than listening to any radio station! But i do remember my 4.0L jeep cherokee be quicker off the mark than the cossi.

The Scorpio must seem nice an economical after that.

I can't believe I am actually getting used to a 20MPG car after my 40 MPG Megane.
Theres nothing so socially irresponsible and uncompromisingly "up yours environmentalists" as driving a big engined car in the UK. My brother lives in California and drives an iccle Audi A3, where's the fun it that? - I told him to get a V8 Hemi engined beast, but he's scared to.

To be honest there doesnt seem to be much in it. I travelled to Sheffield from Norwich in the cherokee & it cost me £27. I dont think i could do it for much less in the cossie but would get there a bitt quicker! Now as for bad fuel consumption you should try my maverick.....geeeeeeeez thats a guzler!

Penguin's shilling's worth is as follows:

I had a Rover Vitesse super turbo whatsit about three years ago and as a cruiser it was a very nice car but put the power down hard and it just went to pieces. 200bhp through the front wheels - NBG.

I now have a Scorp Cosser Estate and it is a much better car in every possible respect - including cost of running (except fuel consumption). I have (briefly) driven a 2.3 and 2.9 12v on test drives. Of the two I rate the 2.3 better than the 2.9 12v because it just feels a bit more together - the 2.9 12v felt a little wheezy to me.

But niether of them came close the Cosser - there aren't many cars you can put a wardrobe in the back of (not the contents, the furniture as well) and still blast of the line like a cat out of hell. The obvious advantage is on the French autoroutes where you don't get much of a run up before you are expected to be doing 90 (else get a French driver in your boot). Press the "S" button and away we go...
