Title: s type jag puzzle....
Post by invernessguy on Jul 31st, 2006, 8:44pm
hi guys, i have a query for you all.....

my mate phoned me today, says he was offered an S type jag at silly cheap money, but it has a blown engine, 3 litre.

He has been told by the garage selling it, who just want it out of the way, that the engine is the same as a scorpio 2.9, so thats why he called me.

I cant be sure even by looking at it if its the same, as i have a 2.3, but maybe someone on here would know already if they use the same short motor?

thanks,

donnie

Not impossible, as the new diesel jag has the same engine as the biggest diesel mondeo, so there has been shared engines between fords and jags. Don't know about this particular one though.

According to wikipedia, it has a "AJ-V6" engine which is

"The Jaguar AJ-V6 engine is a specialized version of Ford's Duratec 25/30 V6. One notable addition is the use of variable valve timing, a feature also shared with Mazda's version of the engine. It is available in 2.0 L, 2.5 L and 3.0 L displacements.

Jaguar's AJ-V6 engine has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with VVT and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and a one-piece cast camshaft, another differentiator from the Ford and Mazda versions."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_S-type
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_AJ-V6_engine

Edit: from what I could dig up on the Duratec engine, it is mostly used in the Mondeo, and def. not in the Scorpio.

Edit2: All of this information may be incorrect, but I only copied it from wikipedia  ;)

thanks for the info, I didnt think that they would use the scorpio engine in the big jag, but as you say, its not impossible!

What is more likely, is the garage that is trying to sell the car to my mate, is telling him rubbish to get it out of the way, and take is money......

Anyone with any more thoughts?

thanks,

donnie

[] likely the garage don't have a clue what they are talking about. They probably haven't actually looked under the bonnet & are just going by what someone else has told them ::)

P.S.  How much did they want for it?

dont know if its the same engine thats fitted to the xk but my brother been looking at them and a man we worked for the other day[ex jaguar mech]told him that if the cars cheap it wont  have HAD a replacement engine already and it could cost you £8k for one

ford and jag do share parts (same company....), but i very much doubt it will be the same engine, my m8 has a 3.0 jag, and if i see him in the next few days (doubtful) i will confirm this for you.

According to wikipedia, he can probably use bits from a scrapped Mondeo ST220 or something (only 3 litre mondeo I can think of at the moment)
(And those are probably just as easy to find as hen teeth covered in rocking horse poo. According to Top Gear, there are more Aston Martins than there are Mondeo ST220s on the road.)  ;D

Kjetil.....time travel....the way forward (or backward).
You could go back in time to before they designed the Scorpio & put right all the wrongs.
This site probably wouldn't exist....but then hey.....we would all have Scorps that were fault free 8)

£2200 for a 'W' reg S type Jag?
Seems a little bit on the cheap side.
Sure it isn't a Rover with the badges changed...lol ::)

def not a rover jonny, but it does have a big hole in the side of the block where the piston launched itself through... anyway, my mate has gone off the idea when i told him a scorpio engine wouldnt fit.
