Title: Re: help please from all pc know hows, Post by cossieguy on Aug 24th, 2006, 9:02pm I've used AVG for a long while now and it picks up everything! No problems running on XP, what worries me though is that theres anything to pick up at all with the firewall running! |

Title: Re: help please from all pc know hows, Post by Kjetil S on Aug 24th, 2006, 9:05pm I use Avast (http://www.avast.com). Free for personal use, uses very little resources, daily updates, AND protects better than Norton Antivirus (atleast that is my experience). All they require is that you register (free) for a key. (You can try it for 60 days without registering) |

Title: Re: help please from all pc know hows, Post by derekne on Aug 24th, 2006, 9:05pm Hello This sounds like to much is running at once. Heres a favorite to speed you little computer up. It will also free what memory you have. Go to start. Then go to RUN. Then type in MSCONFIG Then press OK On the tabs at the top press STARTUP. You now have a list of all the crap you are running most of it is for no reason at all. Look at what you dont want running all the time. And uncheck the box. Click apply and OK. Restart your computer. You will get a box just press dont show again. Good luck. |

Firewalls doesn't stop viruses, only intruders and other unauthorized traffic (atleast that's what they're supposed to do, the firewall in XP couldn't stop a hacker if it hit it in the face ;)). The best protection advice I can offer, in addition to having a good antivirus program, is to stop using Internet Explorer, use Opera or Firefox, and be suspicious about things you install. |

Title: Re: help please from all pc know hows, Post by Octavian_P on Aug 24th, 2006, 9:20pm One of the best possible AV-software is nod32 ....found here http://www.eset.com/ it uses verry little resources, but it has one of the best protection ever made Also a firewall is recommanded like sygate firewall or zone alarm |

Title: Re: help please from all pc know hows, Post by Mummra on Aug 24th, 2006, 9:49pm I have been usig nod32 for a while now and have found it very good, but AVG is also good and is free. But don't forget to do regular checks with Ad-aware and spybot to check for spyware. Zone alarm is quite a good firewall, and I think it is still free. |

I, as KetilS, use Avast on the laptop now, daily updates, workes in the backtround whitout bothering me whit messages, and its smal & fast, havent had virus whit it... Also use AD-Aware, removes ad-ware, spyware & tracing cookies, a "must have"... http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=pop |

Title: Re: help please from all pc know hows, Post by tintin on Aug 28th, 2006, 12:57am yep, norton is very resource hungry, no good on an older computer with XP installed, it just grinds to a halt (you didnt mention the PC spec). my flatmates computer had the same trouble, it even stopped some games installing/running !! worth doing an online scan to check there are no viruses on the computer, they are clever these days and detect when common antiviruses are installed and do funny things to your computer. hth |
