Title: Scorpio Jag Lovers
Post by dh_dove on Oct 14th, 2006, 3:59pm
Dear All,
As a new member I've been trawling thru the site to catch up on whats happening in Scorpio World. Currently looking thru off topic subjects.
Apart from the highly entertaining, amusing, sometimes highly depressing and informative news re Scorps I've been struck by how many posters refer to their Jaguars or their liking for or aspirations to own the marque.
Our new Cossie Ultima is the wife's car, but I drive a '95 XJS 4.0 Celebration Coupe, it's a lovely motor ;D
So my question is this........how many of you also own and drive Jags and "enjoy" all that this entails........grace, space, pace, dodgy electrics, rust, astronomical parts and servicing prices etc. etc.
No honestly I really do love the car but it is sometimes very much a love/hate relationship!  ;)
There again how many of you have ditched the Jag in favour of a proper motor.......... ;D
Regards
DH Dove

I had an old inspector morse Jaguar Mk2 3.4s when I was younger. Beautiful car, all leather seats and walnut dash etc. Cost me £325.00 in 1973.  The price of spares would put me off having another Jag, along with the scary fuel costs.

I've always said to the wife, if money was no object, I would have the Scorpio renovated to Concourse condition, and I'd also buy us a brand new Jag, because I think the quality of Jag engineering is superb.

That said, we both love my Scorpio to bits!!  :D

When I was a kid in the 1980's, one of my first memories was 2 brand new Jaguar XJ's parked at the local airport, I used to walk by and run my hand over the bonnet; I've lusted after one since I was about 4 years old, no other make of car has that same feel to it.

Passed my test at 19 and started looking at cars, was working and had a few £££ in the bank, was looking for a Rover 75 or a V6 Mondeo when to cut a long story short I landed a Solent Blue 1987 Sovereign V12 Sovereign for £200. Insurance was through the roof and it sucked nearly all my wages (11mpg in town) but I looked after it and I miss it now. Gave me responsibility too, my licence, insurance, wages so I had to look after it as I'd be the one fixing it if I damaged it, better than buying a cheap car to thrash and the looks on the neighbour's faces were magic :).

As much as I like my Scorpio I've regretted selling the XJ many times since, a few years older now I'm still longing for another Cat. I don't use the Scorpio every day, it gets a good run every week and the occasional run to London or Ipswich so the fuel isn't a problem, as nice as the 2.3 is it feels so short of power on the motorways and I've had more mechanical woes with the Scorpio than I did with the Jag, I'm training as an electrical engineer so some of the reliability issues on the older Jags don't bother me too much, most of the electrical gremlins in mine were through people reworking the original 'bad' electrics with all the problems that causes.

Seen a few more this year, a 4.0 XJS, 3.2 XJ8 (don't go there), I'm being 'persuaded' to keep the Scorpio and get a Jag as a project, the insurance would bleed me dry though. I'm getting to the age now where the insurance quotes I'm getting are cheaper than the Scorpio, got a quote for a 1990 V12 at £820 fully comp, £890 for the 2.3 Scorpio... can't work that one out.

Yes, the Celebration is a lovely motor, if it's a late model facelift AJ6, you have a future classic there ;)

There goes another late night ramble ::)

Regards, Bruce.

couple of old school mates (brothers) some years ago ditched their good city jobs to go into business repairing jags, spare parts etc. was a gamble but 20 years on and they're doing well with a place in knockolt kent. always remember one of em bought an early 70's saloon, dunno the model, restored it to its former glory, thats when they decided to go into business, think he still has that car, remember it being so big n comfy......other than that i've had no real dealings with jags....
