Nice ideea, my fog lamps are in not so good condition, the glass is "brushed" by 10 years of "heavy duty roads" and the internal mirror has black spots on it ....they look kind of dull and don't make much light, i'm afarid of asking mr. ford how much will be a new pair.... :P

But for now no more expenses i'm having other things to fix first ...like hmm.... a clutch, some tyres, ac-regass, spark plug leads, HT coils....and the list never stops  ;)

still a bit off-topic, but, shouldn't be a problem buying from ebay.co.uk, most sellers ship worldwide (or atleast Europe). No paypal?

on-topic: I think I like the looks on those fog lamps, would be nice to see them in action  :)

Thanks Kjetil S,
These are a spair set so I can fit standard ones at mot time ;)
I will be experimenting with clear perspex lenses and led's on the indicators.
When I finish this side I will take step by step photos of the modifications on the other side and of course a final photo of the finished article on the car :D

NICE  :o , only one thing makes me think, what dispersion angle do the leds have...looking a bit narow

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by Matt on Oct 24th, 2006, 10:55pm
hey

i have to say i rather like them, look modern, but i see a legal issue, on the normal bulb lit fogs, there is a deflector on there to stop the light beam blinding oncomming drivers, i know there led's but i have some 3w luxon star led (not on the car, yet :P)and there blinding, so you would need to direct their out put down a bit.

for now im gonna follow baz and do a HID conversion, then get the headlights aligned again hehe

I agree Mat I think I may wire them as extra driving lamps and perhaps just use a portion say five led's as fog lamps

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by cossie_al on Oct 24th, 2006, 11:04pm
Octavian_P the angle on these is supposed to be 25 degrees but I reckon its narrower than that. However, I did buy them with a driving lamp project in mind and wanted as much light thrown forward as possible.

Is there any way of getting round the internal reflective mirror problem?
My N/S one could do with some TLC.  :)

Not sure if you can get them refinished never heard of it.
I wouldn't care the reflectors on these ones are pretty good.
I did say in parts wanted that I wasnt bothered about the reflector condition but I ended up with a good pair.
If only I had known before I started the mod that there were a number of people neading replacements.

Baz,
I want to experiment on the rears when I eventualy finish the front  ones.
I do like the idea of clear lenses over the led's so until anything lights up all you have is nice shiney bling lights ;D

Atleast up here, everything originally on the car is legal. Modifying the lights in any way automatically makes them illegal, even if they are working perfectly within specs.

You _could_ ofcourse take the route of having them approved, but it is never worth the hassle.

Edit: Aftermarket parts are usually pre-approved (often by Tüv?), and are therefore legal (most of the time)

Oh, and while we're on the subject of LEDs, will these (http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=44&products_id=836) fit behind the clock?

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)

Not had chance to do anything with the clock or instrument bulbs yet so not sure if they will fit or not.
There was a thread a few weaks back about changing the clock bulbs it was more about how to get the clock out but one of the guys is sure to know.

' Why if lexus lights pass mot's? '

simply because lexus have put their lights through the required tests and will have the eec stamp on them, homemade ones will not have.
this is why a lot of kit car companies use other makes of light clusters, it saves designing their own and paying for the tests to make them pass regulations.
its perfectly legal to have clear lenses as long as they have the 'stamp'.

Matt,

these are what the HID lamps look like when lit..... a lot brighter than the standard ones (all be it a little difficult to focus on them.... but you get the idea!)

The question now Baz is are spare bulbs readily available and do they cost the earth.  ??? I know xenon bulbs can cost at least £100 each to replace  :o

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by Matt on Nov 2nd, 2006, 6:32pm
you can get them and yes they are expensive (ive seen them between £20 - £40 each). on the plus side, they last a lot longer, as they run at cooler temps.

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by Baz on Nov 2nd, 2006, 7:01pm
Mike.... they are available and the answer to the question is..... who cares? It's only money!!

Seriously, I don't know. The blub about the xenon lamps is that they tend to be lasting the life of the car under normal use so may not need any

This is the actual set I have. Good quality and easy to fit. I will post some pics later  These are TUV approved as well. Just for further information, my car passed its MOT two weeks or so ago with no problems regarding the lamps or the LED side lamps I have installed either!

Driving lamps would be of more use than fogs, something to throw the dipped beam further. Been thinking myself about changing the beam pattern on the fogs, not sure if this can be done though; standard setup on the Scorpio is good but something more for the unlit roads this time of year would be ideal.

Thinking myself about a xenon conversion, any ideas on the LEDs for the sidelights though Baz?

Regards, Bruce.

I already have the LED bulbs in the side lights. They look pretty good. Only need the ones for the main beam now for the bi-xenon look!

baz, you could buy another HID kit and have all the daylight at night driving you could need...  :P

with modding the fogs into driving lamps, couldnt you remove the deflector in the fog unit then fit a lower wattage bulb?

Mabye but then you just remove the dip pattern and the lower wattage bulb wouldn't give the same light. Thinking more of a way of changing the dispersion to improve the main headlamps without main beam, switching the fogs on with the headlamps doesn't make much difference. Perhaps brighter main lamps are the way to go.

here a thought, and i should of mentioned it before

when i painted the oxidised metal ring that retains the headlight lense, i noticed that the lense it's self was filthy and i mean filthy. i managed to get a paper towl down behind the lense and give it a good clean, and ofcorse made the headlights brighter, maybe it's worth popping off the glass cover part and try cleaning the lense before you buy new bulbs and stuff...

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by Kjetil S on Nov 6th, 2006, 9:41pm
If you get the glass itself off on both sides (for instance if you're planning on darkening the chrome finish), a tip would be to run the lenses through the dishwasher  ;)

DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE CHROME FINISH ATTACHED TO THE LENSES!

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by Matt on Nov 6th, 2006, 9:43pm
i dont mean the inner of the glass bit (either chrome or black) i mean the small round lense that is infront of the dip beam,

it's not removable.. i tried with a scorpio i found in a scrappy first ;)

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)
Post by Baz on Nov 11th, 2006, 7:35pm
I just cable tied the ballasts close to the rear of the head lights. I was a bit daunted by having to drill a 25mm hole in the rear of the plastic cover but it does still come off ok as I found when having to fit new side light bulbs a few weeks ago!

Did you get the same ones I got Matt?

Baz

Title: Re: Modded fog lamps (lexus style?)

Hey all

Baz, got the exact same kit as you, as for the ballasts, i removed the headlights and fitted them under the headlight unit using a self tapper, so i dont loose any more of the very limited engine compartment space.

http://i15.tinypic.com/4hicm5d.jpg

i know what you mean with drilling the hole though, still end result more then makes up for a bit of butchering hehe

Matt, don't get me wrong mate but unless the ballasts are sealed you'll get fireworks when it rains, that ledge behind the headlamp gets soaked in water.
