Title: Strange or funny place names Post by jonnycab on Nov 22nd, 2006, 4:04am Inspired by the the Cumbrian town of 'C o c k e r m o u t h', in a recent 'Seen by you' topic. I was wondering what the funniest or ruddest place or town names in Britain (or Europe) are ? I drove through a place in Dorset (I think) called 'Puddle Town' & the next village was called 'Little Puddle'. }{ Or 'Ugly' in Essex }{ |

Title: Re: Strange or funny place names Post by craig on Nov 22nd, 2006, 7:33am yes,it is in dorset.... funilly enough,it was originally name piddle town, and there was also a place called piddle-trentide,the river was named the rives piddle, dates right back to the toll puddle martyrs...... if you carry along that road, heading toward bournemouth, there was a tiny village called nutsterton as well, sadly though,i think that was renamed.... what is it with "do-gooders" taking away our heritage ? |

Title: Re: Strange or funny place names Post by cossieguy on Nov 22nd, 2006, 7:46am I believe in the Cotswolds there are 2 villages one called Upper Slaughter and one called Lower Slaughter. Nice place for a weekend away (No guarantee you'll make it back though ;D) Then there's the famous "Land of Nod" in Yorkshire. Pidley in Cambs. guy. |

Title: Re: Strange or funny place names Post by LiverpaulH on Nov 22nd, 2006, 1:59pm Childish maybe but I;ve always thought that Sc unthorpe sounds like a toothpaste! of a place!! Also what about pronounciation, around here we have, rubery (roobery not rubbery), leominster (lemster, not leo_minster), warwick (warick, not war_wick) and loads of others which continuously get pronounced incorrectly. Haven't checked the atlas yet though. Paul Edited to get Sc unthorpe through the naughty word checker!! It reminds me of an incident that occurred when sthorpe council put in a new computer system, after a couple of days no-one had received a single email......the word filter was putting them all in the banned folder because every one of their email address had the word; i.e. thingymejib@scun thorpe.gov.uk ;D |
