Title: tali top tip......
Post by taliban on Feb 12th, 2007, 6:57pm
just cleaned my cooker hood and cooker, hate the job, and i've just found the best thing to cut through dirt n grease etc is alloy wheel cleaner, i use lidl's W5 alloy wheel cleaner, it was only 99p or 1.99 (cant remember) for a half litre spray bottle.....it does a pretty good job on car wheels too.....

I do the car windows with Autoglym super resin, works great on the bodywork too would you believe ::). At speed you don't even need the wipers, better then any anti rain product ;)

What the blimmin 'ell is Mer by the way?? ???

Am I in the wrong boat using Autoglym?? ::)

mer is a versatile german car polish, pretty good stuff, but the best i've found is joffs classic carnuba wax sold on ebay, around the same price, but far better than mer, autoglym, crystal glo etc....

"MER" is what you buy if you own a mini (old type) and your next door neighbour has the annoying habit of repeatedly setting fire to your bonnet. 8)
Joking apart, my colleague swears its the best poss. polish if you have a black car..............I've never used it but suspect it would have to go some to beat Autoglym "red label"

dh, personally i'd put mer way above autoglym, but below joffs, although mer is more versatile.....

I bought some Joffs carnuba on Ebay last year & I have to admit, it is by far the best car polish I have ever come across....I used to be a Mer-man (no, I haven't got webbed feet)  ::)

I've used it a couple of times & the results were so good that I'm scared to use it again, incase my bottle runs out.....the polish that is & not my stamina  ;)

Mer is still great for doing windows though, both outside & inside....& great on chrome.... not too much of that on the Scorp though, but plenty on my MK1 Granny  :)

My favourite cleaning 'find' is Dettox Mould and Mildew spray available in all supermarkets.

This stuff cleans the grouting between tiles in showers like nothing I've ever seen. Just spray on, leave for 30 mins, and then spray away with the shower head. Really incredible. Smells a bit, but really does the business.

It's also brilliant for spraying on garden furniture, and gets rid of greeny winter marks and all that crud that gets on garden tables.

Dunno if I'd risk it on the Scorp though!!  ;)

Does anyone know what gets the black spots off the mastic around the bath ?

I've not found anything yet that will shift it, & when you try to scratch it off, it takes the mastic out as well  ???

This is a hard water area, so it's obviously due to scaling... ::)

JC, Surely the black is mould ? so why not try S/Ds' remedy.  :)

Simmo.....I've tried the Dettox stuff & that dosen't shift it.
The mould isn't on the surface of the mastic, it's like it's in it....it's almost like the mastic has reacted to something :-/
The mastic is supposed to be guarateed mould resistant for 10 years.....it's only been there for three years  ???

I have seen this happen after only one year.I work in the building trade and the times I have had to remove the old sealant and renew it is ridiculous. All I can say is if the mould is embedded in the sealant then the only way is to remove and reseal. But you must make sure that the bath edge to tile is totally dry and leave new sealant at least 24 hours to cure.Roy.

Seen it here too :)

Get yourself a tube of silicone eater to help remove it and get a good quality sealant to replace it with...like the ones which cost a tenner a time :)

Dove, I love my black paintwork but the moment I even put the car cover on it looks like it's not been touched for months...I was thinking about one of those paint protection systems they sell on eBay...yes, I've had a drink tonight, in gullible mode now ;D. Something's been used on the Jag though, it gets filthy dirty but the rain always beads off like it's been polished. I guess in its previous life as a fleet car it got machine polished to death but really, it's too shiny, even before the Autoglym :o. But so was the Scorpio come to think of it, I've really had too much to drink I reckon...that was too shiny as well.

I love my Autoglym, would take a lot to tear me away from it...but may get a bottle of er...Mer and see if anyone sets fire to my bonnet :)

Regards, Bruce.

I'm with Andrew on Jofs!

I found Joff's to be quite expensive...  Not the £5.90 for the wax... The 28 quid on top for the WAX jacket that hooked me when I did the search on E-bay!!   ::)
I'm a Mer man myself but if Joff's is as good as you reckon.. I'll be converted.
If we ever get weather to accommodate a wash'n'wax!!

OK........if you haven't tried it, don't knock it.......
I'll give Joffs(Jofs?) a go, if it's that much better than Autoglym it should really be something!
Just one question, some of the Carnuba polishes I have used in the past were really hard work........Autoglym is easy for a lazy person like me....what's Jof(f)s like?
Tiberius
Stick with the Autoglym and lay off the pop :P ::) }{, anyway the Jags got enough horsepower to make polishing irrelevant 8)

hi there

as it says on his site, wipe on, wipe off.

try it and see what you think. imo, there's nothing to beat it (easily, anyway).

btw, it really starts working from 2 coats onwards. :)

i was a 'mer man' till someone on here suggested joffs, the depth of shine is quite amazing. the only advantage mer has is its a bit more versatile, you can use it wet or dry, hot or cold.
i've also bought joffs rubber, vinyl, leather cleaner, thats done an amazing job on my sofa and the scorps seats, leaves a semi kind of gloss finish without being slippery. joffs car shampoo is probably the best i've used too....
tbh, if i had the money, time, business acumen i would approach joffs about a franchise at car n bike shows etc.....

Aye Dove, my cat is behaving badly at the moment - the single malt is to stop me thinking about the cat's attitude and other things besides ::)

I used to use Turtle Wax but it just doesn't cut it on dark metallics. Autoglym is by far the best stuff I've used, bought the Scorpio up great (was in a right mess when I bought it, looked like it had been cleaned with Ajax). The thing with any polish which bothers me is that they go on as an emulsion and dry as white powder - polish that off and apart from leaving white marks up the corners and in any stonechips it leaves minute surface scratches all over which show like hell on dark colours in strong sunlight if you aren't careful. Autoglym works best in hot weather, dries almost rubbery and really conditions the paint then...

When I kept the Scorp outside (with all the crap and muck it used to get on it), I used to cut it back now and then with cutting compound - not T-Cut but the stuff in the tin used by bodyshops. Rub it in lightly and you can feel it erasing all the muck from the paint, paintwork goes a bit matt and hazy after you wash it off but when you polish the car back up again the polish goes on really easily and it feels a lot smoother and glossier afterwards...I did used to get comments about how nice it looked ;)

I will try Jofs though, a real sucker for perfection am I :)

Regards, Bruce.

hi there

there's a great guide to car cleaning here (http://www.mothers.com/detailguidedownload/). i've been meaning to buy one of those clay bars for the wifes civic. you can 'feel' a surface to the paintwork.
