Anybody running it yet? If so could we have some independent reviews, is it worth upgrading from XP?

Not got it yet, in my experience of any new Windows Operating System its better to leave it a year or two until they get all the majors bugs sorted out  ;)

Not running it yet, but have played with one at work - looks ok but XP has most of what I need anyway - would definitely wait for a service pack to be released.

Also seems to slow older PCs down and some drivers may not be released for older hardware so it is worth checking before you buy to upgrade!

Yep, had it running for about a month. It's not worth the grief, and I seriously consider formatting and getting XP back.

Personally (with hindsight), I would stay away from it for AT LEAST a year. Maybe more.

cossie, do you really need it? lets face it most people running xp myself included only use 50% of what it can do.

I agree. ALL versions of Windows need de-bugging for at least 12 Months before I'll buy them.

There's no way I will be upgrading. XP does all I need it to do for now.

From what I have seen of it usual MS OS system Memory and graphics hungry as well.

I personally think unless you HAVE to be up with those that MUST have stick with what you know.
Me personally I run Win 2K and XP Pro but I still prefer Win 2K .

I will NOT be upgrading until they stop support for Win 2K and XP.

When it comes to stability vs memory/cpu usage, not much from MS can beat Win2k. Only reason I prefer XP, is because of the hardware support (which is almost non existant in Vista).

Vista actually managed to make my Atlon64 with 1GB RAM and Radeon graphics chip feel like an old 486.
I would probably recommend having atleast 2GB of RAM if you plan on upgrading.

yep, i run 2k on my old server, its always on and rebooted once a month. never had a problem in 3 yrs (apart from when i o/c'd the graphics card and melted a card next to it  ;D). my gaming machine runs XP as its got new bits and seems to run much better on XP.

my view is upgrade when its necessary, not when its a "nice to have". im not touching Vista for a few years, even if it does have 3-d menus and voice recognition. why do i need that? will just slow my games down....

I'd steer clear, they're already planning service pack 1 !

and I wouldnt bother with the ultimate edition most users will be fine with the home premium, 40 quid saved :)

Windows 98 here. Bought it when I built my first PC (when XP was about £400), worked so well all these years that I've never bothered to upgrade.

Works smooth on my machine, only problem I'm hitting now is that I recently bought 2 GB of memory and found 98 won't support more than 768megs. And now Microsoft have discontinued support for it, most likely I'll have to upgrade soon if I need any new hardware.

Got XP Pro on the laptop, runs fine and all that but as long as it works in the first place I don't care about features. Most of the time Microsoft's programs aren't the best anyway (like WMP, Internet Explorer)

Get a lot of computer based materials form the university now, sooner or later they will stop supporting 98 too, then I'll have to upgrade my main system :-/

If it ain't broken, don't fix it ;)

Regards, Bruce.

The register published a review of Vista today:

Conclusion:
"So, there's our first look at Vista. It does benefit from a lot of good ideas, many of them Apple's, of course, but good nevertheless. It simply doesn't work very well, unfortunately. There are serious problems with execution; it's not polished; it's not ready. It should not be on the market, and certainly not for the outrageous prices being charged. Don't buy it, at least until after the first service pack is out. Don't pay to be a beta tester. ®"

Vista is realy bad now, it uses about 500 MB of RAM just to run itself properly, uses the video card preaty much (especialy if you run Aero Glass). A lot of hardware it's not supported, printers, sound cards, tv-tuners etc. I'll stick to xp untill i can't use it anymore...or linux will be capable of running all new games  ;D

I installed Vista on (one of) my PC about a fortnight ago.  Hmmm, very pretty - kinda reminded me of KDE on linux - and some nice touches, BUT these are cosmetics, not essential.  After an hour or so I got bored of the new look and put XP back on.

Yes, Vista is 'nice' (aesthetically), and it does have some pretty cool features I'm told, mainly regarding search, etc.  but it isn't worth buying as an upgrade and don't forget that the cost begins with the installation DVD - you'll probably have to spend more money upgrading your hardware to get the same level of performance as you've currently got with XP.  Also, most of Vista's new features are available as downloads for XP (Media player 11, IE7, etc.), and those that aren't such as the search tool are well catered by 3rd party software such as Google desktop.

Seems to me Microsoft is no longer leading (if you can call it that) in the way it did with Win'95 + 2000, instead it's making MS versions of 3rd party stuff you'd have downloaded for XP and bundling it with Vista.  The upshot is that it all integrates very well and seamlessly, unlike umpteen different programs from different authors, but that isn't IMHO worth the money MS want you to part with...

Of course, most people will end up with Vista, like it or not, when they buy a new computer, but personally I'd let that be the reason for getting Vista, not vice versa.

Like Snoopy says, you really cant beat Win 2000. I run it on a server at the house and it's never let me down, been more reliable than XP.

As for vista, I stopped at Staples the other day to get a few things and noticed a HP laptop with the new vista. I rebooted it to see how long it took. I ended up walking out the store it took so long. The laptop had a P4 2.8GHZ and 1GB RAM and a 7200 RPM HD and it was still slow.
