Title: captive troops in iran
Post by julie_quaife on Apr 3rd, 2007, 5:01pm
heres hoping for the safe release of our captured troops in iran. our thoughts i am sure go out to all their families, one of our local boys was paraded on tv, he looks well, i hope this is the case and there will be no long term pyschological problems for any of them. i do not know what the hell iran is playing at.  i regularly  read the news on the internet on sites such as cnn, reuters and al-jazeera to get a batter view on world events, i find our terrestial news too limited. i do hope that iran is not trying to push for war as for some time many internet news items state that the iranian navy have been 'trying' the waters with other countries ships in that particular waterway and appear to want to start some form of confrontation, time will only tell!!

It seems  that a wee bit  of  imaginative  diplomacy is  needed .

An discreet apology from the UK  Government  ( sincere or otherwise )  is all that's needed  to  release  the  service personnel.

Iran  have got themselves in an escalating  situation they bitterly regret getting into.

They need  a way  out  that  saves face  and  doesn't  involve  them  climbing  down  or capitulating  but  satifies  its  National  pride  and   ( VERY important  in that part of the world )  its  honour.

i understand what you mean but we as a country are starting to show too much weakness and need to start standing firm and remain firm. we must not become apologetic for problems we have not caused. iran appear to have started this situation by making illegal manuoeveres whilst our people were under the jurisdiction of the UN.if iran are concerned with their national honour they should consider how their actions would be seen by the outside world and act accordingly. their behaviour to me is childish. one does see hope when ordinary people from iran have spoken with good common sense in interviews on the tv news. there now seems to be some belief that the line seperating iranian/iraqi waters has moved since its installation, so perhaps if this is the case a verbial line could be drawn under this whole situation and territory remarked giving both side a common ground which should then allow iran to save face and free our people.

Ditto :)

I've said before that my old man was ex-RAF, he served during the 1960's in places like Borneo and Bahrain. Not sure what he'd have made of all this but he wouldn't be happy. He used to talk about how volatile the middle-east region was back then, a lot of friction between the local secular groups and our troops sent out to peacekeep etc.

I've also got a good friend I keep in touch with who lives in America, he's just been called up for another 12 months duty in southern Afghanistan...he'd hoped it might have been Qatar but 'the sandpit' it is, in reaction to the ever-increasing violence out there.

I'm with Julie here, it needs careful handling to get a peaceful outcome and to stop this escalating into something more serious but backing down would do a lot of damage in the long run I think, you'd have rogue states all over the globe kidnaping British personell and demanding prisoner exchanges and god knows what else.

We've got some of the best armed forces in the world, here's to getting them back unharmed :).

Regards, Bruce.

No thanks to Blair.....what a tw*t he looked on TV just now.........but then he looks like that most of the time.  ;D

Glad they are to be freed anyway. We know several people in the services including my Wife's Son in law who is a Squadron leader in the RAF. It has been a worrying time.

yes it it great news that they have all been released, i was a bit concerned the tv news were making too much of things before the captive troops had returned back to britain, thankfully it ended without any hitches. i think the troops acted correctly and played the whole situation reponsibly and are a credit to our forces. already some people have been slagging them off for not 'fighting', they did the right thing!!  8)
taliban are you sure about who was 'map reading'? surely if it had been a woman the difference in location milage would have been a whole lot more!! ;D ;D 8)

I doubt  yer average  squaddie would have been so  compliant  towards their captors   if it had been an Brit Army platoon that had been captured.

Name, Rank and serial number  and kiss my **** would have been the order of the day.

That's not to denigrate the other two services  but it's  the Army that has vast  experience in the Middle East  and therefore bears  the brunt of  military action, and casualties.

Looks like Fay whatssit will have enough money to send over a few gunboats of her own.

Disgraceful turn of events selling stories like that; especially when in the same week 2 young girls get blown to bits along with two guys in a warrior "armoured" personnel carrier. She should be ashamed and the young lad who has done the same.

Ah, name rank and serial number. In this day and age dream on!
I am very disappointed that these serving forces personnel allowed themselves to be manipulated as thay did. OK their lives were at risk, but isn't that what it's all about when you join up?
Instead of telling the Iranian President to "go forth" they lined up on their knees to kiss his a**e.
As for "Fay - OOH they held me in solitary confinement", get her off my TV screen NOW please.
Today she had the nerve to inform us that some of the money she's raking in is "going to the Ship"
I fully expect them all to appear soon on "British Forces Celebrity Get Me Out of Here". (With full syndication and advertising rights obviously)
With the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War imminent it makes you wonder how we would do that now............."I was at Col. H's death - full details", "Belgrano Sinking - we were the guilty ones and fully to blame" etc. etc.
I think that the bottom line is that when your whole government is based on spin it percolates down to all levels - including now the MoD unfortunately.
I could go on but.........
Rant Over.

It may not be long down the road before we can sell our story when we have to escape from this country :-[
Seeing we are being subtly invaded with the help of a few powerful politically correct isolated from reality pil"""ks and a weak goverment.. >:(

Sorry to move off topic, just that it seems to reflect our countries weakness all round.. :-[
