Title: Help! no sound on my PC
Post by Ultima2300 on Apr 12th, 2007, 2:05pm
Do any of you computer literate types know why my PC has suddenly rejected its audio devices?

It still pings for error messages, windows sound on start up, etc. but tells me I have no audio installed for everything else.

I can sometimes get it back by using system restore, but this is bloody inconvenient, do I need to spend hours on the help line, or is there a quick fix?

Any pointers gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Geoff

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the soundcard driver (and preferably the newest driver found on the manufacturers site)

Drivers, drivers, drivers ;). Search on the net for your soundcard's manufacturer and see if they have another set of drivers you can download. Also some of the online troubleshooting databases are helpful to browse through, helplines can be a pain in the bum.

What computer system/soundcard is it and what OS? Has it just started happening or has it appened since you've had the system?

Over Easter I upgraded from Win98 to XP, put 2 gigs of memory in and got myself a nice, all singing, all dancing gfx card...I liked 98 but it did get buggy over time with the new hardware I upgraded to, had many problems like you describe. My Soundblaster Audigy kept doing this on 98, was a known fault with the drivers yet it said on the box that it supported 98 >:(

Regards, Bruce :).

Give that man a coconut!

The last thing installed was an update to windows Media 11.  Rolled back to 10 and the sound returns. (Hurrah!)

Thanks for the other suggestions guys, I'll get to them if the problem returns, but I am the least technical person you'll ever meet.  Percussive maintainance being as far as I usually get ;)

Thanks Boogeyman, I owe you a pint if there's ever a convenient meet.

Best wishes

Geoff

BTW your reputation with my nephew seems to be undeserved ;D
