Title: mirical products !!!!!!!!!
Post by dan_the_man on May 9th, 2007, 12:27am
Howdy folks of this fine site.I came accross these products during a mindless search or twenty on EBAY ! this one looks like it advances the ignition timing . item no 300108475455 . this claims to 'magnasise ' fuel, I have been told by a sceptical chemist ' only the oxygen molicuels could be affected'. item no 190111000270  . I would appreciate any input anyone has to offer as to these products effectiveness ! or as to the detremental effects. thank's for taking the time to read my post. DAN.

This is probably just a resistor that you fit into the IAT plug instead of the IAT  :-/

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190111000270&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3D190111000270%26fvi%3D1

This uses magnetism to apparently influence the molecular structure of the petrol to make it burn more evenly & efficiently.

Usually you have to have two magnets mounted either side of the fuel pipe that repel each other (pos - pos, or neg - neg) to do this. This thing just seems to sit on top of the pipe  ???

There is no real evidence to say that these things actually work.

I've been running an in-line 'Fuel Cat' for a while now. It works on a similar principle...It has the magnets, but also has fuel conditioning tin alloy lumps in it, & I can report that there has been no effect on fuel consumption or performance on the Scorp.

However, I also have one in my MK1 Granny, which I fitted for the sole purpose of being able to run on unleaded, & it runs perfectly.

But I also wonder, being that the V6 Essex lump in my '77 Granny probably has hardened valve seats, then does it really need it ?  :-/....I'm tempted to remove it & let y'all know the results ;)

So maybe they do work or maybe they don't  :-/...it's debatable  ;)

This guy invented this kind of thing...

These magnets have been around for years, the brandname that comes to mind are "Ecoflow" I think it has the effect of supposedly re-alighning the molecules in the fuel to give a more even combustion. I think it's more a case of "The Kings new clothes syndrom" if you want to try it for nothing you can aquire very strong magnets out of old hard drives, just strap them to your fuel line nearest the engine ???
I have found that the only sure way to cut fuel costs is to convert your car to LPG which at the moment costs 39p per litre.  Costs a bit to do but is a sure way.....and well worth it.
There is a resistor available on e-bay which if you put it in circuit with the MAF it tricks the system into thinking the air is at a different temperature and causes the ECM to adjust the fueling ratio. Does it work? suppose it could do in theory, however these systems are the results of millions of pounds worth of research and development by some of the best brains in the business, I think that bunging a half pence resistor in a sophisticated circuit is probably asking for trouble... I may be wrong!

Only my opinions... :-[

i saw this on tv the other night, i think it was on discovery, the two guys that diss myths in america.

they got all the so-called things that make the petrol burn slower and they came up this conclusion........................

NONE OF THEM WORKED, in fact the magnets seemed to burn quicker

Title: Re: mirical products !!!!!!!!!
Post by jonnycab on May 9th, 2007, 9:50am
I think all these products are designed to give the effect of a raised octane level...so it makes sense that it will burn quicker, if you floor it.

But because of the so called 'extra power', then you don't have to be so heavy on the accelerator, thus saving fuel  :-/

afraid not................. they done alsorts of tests and still the same result!

THEY DIDNT WORK, the program is called MYTH BUSTERS

Having been around for quite a bit longer than a lot of you guys (I'm 60 now), I can promise you that the ONLY way to get better fuel consumption from a petrol engine is to keep it well tuned and serviced, and to ease up on the right foot!

These GIMMICKS are just that!      Save your money.  ;)

I agree with spannerdemon, also if you use  cruise type driving little braking so no heavy accelerating you will get there quicker for less fuel also carrying around a full tank of petrol also drops mpg. 20 years plus ago some used to put anti static things on the back of cars I seem to remember that these were found to be a con, makes you wonder what will come next ???

i thought the anti static things were to stop you getting static shocks that some cars gave when you touched them?

the ignition advancers/retarders work, been on sale for bikes for years.....

I think you'd notice much more effect from cleaning your fuel injectors and putting a tank of good quality fuel in than any miracle device for magnetizing the fuel supply ::).

If you increase the octane of fuel the ECU retards the timing anyway so what do you gain?

The world is full of things that don't do what the're supposed to do, but have sold by the bucket load......here's a few  ::)

Spot creams do not get rid of acne, because acne is more to do with hormones than a dirty face  :D

Cillit Bang doesn't clean a two pence coin just by dipping it in the stuff  ::)

Pills, potions, lotions & those vacuum things do not enlarge your manhood, not that I've ever tried any of these I might add  ;)

The Bullworker, which claimed to vastly increase strength within a week & muscle mass within a month  ???....& was better than using weights  ::)

Sunny Delight which claimed to be full of vitamin C & good for your kids, & was the best selling soft drink about ten years ago was proved to have less vitamin C than a bag of crisps & if you drank enough of the stuff, would actually turn your skin orange, due the additives & dyes  :o....& not to mention the sugar rush  ::)

Carlsberg, which claimed to be "probably the best lager in the world", wasn't, because it used to only contain 3% alcohol....Today that would be classed as a practically non-alcoholic drink  :(

Learn to speak Spanish in a week  ???...now that's just downright ridiculous....a few words maybe, but to be able to hold a conversation....nahhhh  ::)

Finally...the number one best seller of all time....the one that millions of people believe in & life without it would be totally meaningless if it was proved to be the biggest scam that ever existed.........

So even though we are all in agreement that theoretically these fuel savers cannot possibly work.
Do we really know enough about the molecular structure of fuel to know that it is not affected by the introduction of a tin alloy or magnetism ?  :-/

Taliban stated that such things have been used in Motorbikes for years & that they apparently do work, but maybe only in engines that don't have fuel injection. The Fuel Cat has been used on alot of motorbikes, with apparent, noticable enhancement in performance.

So I think I'm going to remain open minded on this subject now, as I don't know enough about magnetism & the conditioning/separation of fuel molecules, or the introduction of tin alloy, to totally dismiss all these fuel savers/enhancers as being a rip off  :)

If Broquet came up with an idea all those years ago (1941), that apparently worked on the Russian fighter planes, then surely his theory would survive today & be put to use in vehicles & heating systems etc ?  :-/

But as a performance enhancement on a vehicle that doesn't have the limitations that yours does and uses an Engine Management System, does it really have any worth? I think the experts say otherwise.

wow, what a responce. cheers gent's. it was more performance than economy I was after , this is a great debate though.  would I be correct in thinking the ignition advancers would be useless with the ECU ? or cancled anyway .

'Taliban stated that such things have been used in Motorbikes for years & that they apparently do work, but maybe only in engines that don't have fuel injection. The Fuel Cat has been used on alot of motorbikes, with apparent, noticable enhancement in performance.'

i was actually talking about the ignition advancers, they used to be a mechanical 'bolt on' that advances the timing, they're now an electrical 'bolt in' gizmo for fuel injection, not sure how good the latter ones are.
as for magnets in fuel, fuel cats etc, never tried them, sounds like 'snake oil' to me lol

I tried it once. It does clean it, but it doesn't bring out a new coin shine, more a dull acid erosion like effect. Not disimilar to putting lead crystal through the dishwasher quite a few times.

now that does look like garbage, a better or more even air flow will improve performance, hence people gas flowing heads for racing etc, but it says that thing fits in the air intake pipe? what before the air filter? if so it'll just fan the air into the filter, if it fits after the filter it'll just fan it towards the combustion chamber over the same bends, rough edges etc that cause turbulence.....

LOL LOL LOL ;D

Only on this site could a conversation go from resistors that make your car go faster, through vacuum pumps which make your ...ermm...never mind...  to Cillit Bang and minature devices to control the weather in your car's air intake system ::)

Dan, don't go there mate...your Scorp is nice but give her a chance and she'll take all your money and leave you poor - that tornado thing would serve more use as a paperweight, I doubt it'd even work in a vacuum cleaner :( ;D

Which brings me on to those cyclone container things you fit onto bagged cylinder vacuum cleaners and Calgon tablets for that washing machine which goes wrong even before you've removed all the packaging, let alone used it enough to find out whether or not it scales up if you use Calgon...

Do they work? Like hell they do ::)

response to petehull,,,never tried it without it in as when leaded fuel was being phased out i was told that my car would burn valves out if unleaded was used on a leaded head, was advised to strip the head and put hardened valve seats in or use a fuel additive, i used neither and fitted the "broquet", so in answer to your question ,,, no i didn,t try it without!

I have tried these magnets before (many years ago) and had absolutely no change in fuel consumption.
I also watched the article on mythbusters and they did try various things that allegedly improve fuel cosumption.
I think the conclusion was, as has already been said keep your car in good servicable order and go easy on the loud pedal.
No chance of me ever getting 30 mpg with this heavy right foot of mine then ;)

Title: Re: mirical products !!!!!!!!!

A good tip for getting some extra power & better fuel consumption....

Take out the spark plugs & have a look down the holes.

If the plug seating has any carbon etc sitting around the edge, then give it a clean with a rag & if the deposits are hard, give it a scrape with a long screwdriver until it looks nice & shiney again.

Then clean up the sealing rings on the plugs with a bit of fine grade wet & dry, so they are nice & smooth.

Put the plugs back in & take it for a spin. The difference should be noticed straight away & the mpg will also be better.....there was quite a significant improvement in both acceleration & mpg on my 2.3  :)

Any deposits around the plug seating will mean that they won't seal properly & gas will escape, causing loss of compression & hot/lean running.

This is often something that is overlooked when replacing the plugs  ;)

Scorpio does have an AIR resonator just after the MAF, which should bring the effects we all want, higher mpg, more torque, more power, less emissions. The thing is that the Scorpio resonator isn't restrictive. It makes air vortexes without sticking in something in the air flow.

A lot of "hi-tech" gadgets can be seen here

A good idea about putting them around the oil filter....it sounds crazy enough to work  ;D

Did anyone realise that the diff plug is magnetic & serves the same purpose. Take it out & have a look at the slivers of metal stuck to it....shows you how badly your diff is deteriorating  ;)

Whilst on the subject of what works and what doesn't work.  If you need to clean stained mugs, or the tea pot, or descale the kettle or the shower head - or anything that need descaling - use denture powder but not the tablets. The tablets are not so effective.

Try it out by simply putting a small dollop in a grotty mug, add boiling water and wait ten minutes.  Comes up like new. And you don't have to scald it out afterwards because the dental powder does you no harm.

I've used it for years.  I buy jars of it from Superdrug.

And no before you ask - not for my teeth  8)
