I use Mandriva. It's not knoppix, but it's still linux.. What do you need to know?  ;D

got a fried sata drive from a windows machine on my hands, norton goback has fried it, but it changes the partition type to 44, so i cant get another windows machine to recognise it.

borrowed a knoppix cd, booted in, it sees the drive, but says "Volume is corrupt. Forced to continue". I need to know how to start up a partition tool to change partition type/fix the MBR.....

no idea how linux works, so struggling a bit  ;D

Don't know if this will help you, but may be worth a try.  ;)

HERE (http://discussions.virtualdr.com/archive/index.php/t-92604.html)

The guy seems to have found a way round it at the bottom of the post.  Good luck anyway.

yeah, problem is i cant disable goback, tried just about everything.....its just about the worst idea i have ever seen, mucking about with partition types !!

Maybe this can help

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic74951.html

There seems to be a tool that can be burned to a cd and can revert anything goback has done.

Post by tintin on Jun 9th, 2007, 7:21pm
no good, in order to reverse goback, it first has to find the partition..... no MBR no reverse.....it just hangs  ???

if you have a windows cd, try using the windows recovery console, and type 'fdisk /fixmbr' or 'fdisk /mbr' (can't remember which 2k/xp uses)

Edit: If it is the mbr that is the problem, and not the partition table.

Title: Re: linux
Post by tintin on Jun 9th, 2007, 10:13pm
i think its both, when it boots into recovery console, there are no drives attached, so cant run fdisk etc. when i boot into windows from a second drive, it can see the drive, but no access to it.

under linux i can see the drive (130GB used of 250GB), but only one folder "Docs & settings" (6GB). have changed the partition to type 07 (windows ntfs) from 44 (goback). also checked mbr, tests fine. but still linux wont mount the drive properly and see all the files.

i guess next step is to try a file recovery programme? getting a bit out of my depth here..... ;)

Try going into windows 2000 or xp and into disk management you might just be able to fix it from inside there. I remember I had a somewhat similar problem a long tie ago with partion magic and  fixed a similar problem using windows 2000 disk management.

Title: Re: linux
Post by tintin on Jun 10th, 2007, 5:20pm
windows doesnt recognise the partition, so i cant use it to do anything to it !! its because norton goback rewrites the partition type as 44, so its not a windows (07) partition any more..... thats why im using linux, its not so snooty  ;D

i have worked out how to use the terminal and change to superuser in linux, used the testdisk programme and have changed the partition type to 07, can see the drive now, but missing most of the file structure. it says the drive is 130GB of 250GB, but only shows me one folder, total 5GB. hmmm.....

Use a sector editor to change the partition value manually?

yep, as above, have now changed partition back to type 07, using linux, but its only showing me one folder of 5GB ??? but properties on the drive shows 130GB of data, not sure how to get them back....

all fixed !! having changed the partition type and fixing the MBR, i didnt know where to go next in Linux. I took a stab, and hooked up a second drive, installed XP, and when it rebooted it detected the goosed drive, fixed filesystem problems, and all is restored !!

phew, my flatmates dodgy files survive another day  ;D

When my HDD died (and the backup drive 'mysteriously' got corrupted too) - I found a free tool on the web called test-disk - it got back pretty much everything and now lives in my utils folder - backed up of course!  ::)

It has another very handy use too: Getting people online so they can complain about the V word :o

V...Vi...Vis...no, I can't...too much strain on the ol' Pacemaker ::)

My sister's new laptop came with V*** installed - today she'd finally had enough and asked to borrow my XP CD...

Apparently if you complain to Microsoft by email or letter they will refund the money you paid for VISTA.. so I am reliably informed.
Apparently a lot of people are not happy with VISTA and are complaining.... Already a service pack out and another on its way.... and this after 5/6 years of trials under the " longhorn " name ....
I just thinks it is the " Me " version of XP and just another keep me rich thing for Gates .....his coffers are running low!

I've made a habit of NOT buying a new operating system until its at least two years old and has most of its problems sorted out ;)

I don't think I've ever paid for an OS (except maybe the one that came installed on my present laptop)  ;)

I am the same as Darren.
But being in the Computer industry I am always testing software and operating systems.

Time Microsoft sorted out their software BEFORE they market it. It's the same every time . Bugs, patches, Security fixes, on and on and on.  >:(

I use XP Home, and there's NO WAY I'm changing. We're stuck with Windows, and that's all there is to it, but I'm not lining Bill Gates's pockets with this VISTA nonsense, until HE sorts it out, and I'M  good and ready.  ;D

I prefer 98 or 2k, things about XP wind me up (like those bubbles that pop up on the taskbar to tell you you haven't got antivirus installed when you have >:(). I'm on XP Pro, a friend who works as a server engineer told me that Pro is more streamlined but Media Centre is basically the same just a lot cheaper...not sure how true this is. IMO, 2k was the best, had some of the good parts of 98 tweaked and without the loony anti piracy stuff XP has, and it used less memory.

Only reason I moved up from 98 was as I upgraded the hardware drivers got worse and worse, only other reason was it wouldn't do the amount of memory I upgraded to...if it hadn't been for this, I'd still be on 98 ::).

Does anyone know how to disable those taskbar message bubbles? They drive me bloomin' mad ;D

Cheers mate, that does wind me up a bit at times, every time I boot the desktop I have loads of these come up...

Just re-read some of my post, I guess I go off at a tangent at times...perhaps I should calm down a bit, take some medication to calm my pacemaker before I ramble on in a thread :-[

My facourite "function" in XP is the auto-reboot-after-update-when-you're-not-looking bit. You update the system, you press "later" when you're asked to reboot, and when later comes... It reboots.

I've turned it off, but it was a *slight* nuisance after a fresh install when I had started an over-night download. If only the computer had stayed on over the night...

If you want to stop the auto reboot after installing updates then its all HERE (Stop Auto Reboot) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555444)

I like 2000 too but my MP3 player will only work on XP - that's pretty much the sole reason for installing it.  There are lots of nice touches in explorer on XP such as the tasks on the left of a window, scanner util, etc. but it need twice the memory of 2000 to get the same performance.
