Title: is any member a professinal valetter
Post by cossie_al on Sep 25th, 2007, 12:52pm
Or for that matter does anyone have experience with clay bars?
The reason I ask is, yesterday I decided to take the clay bar to my new car but on very close inspection the paint has a very fine rippled finish.
I clayed a small part of the boot lid and again on very close inspection you could see where the clay bar had done its stuff on the high points of the ripples but not the low points.
What I am worried about is removing all the clear coat on the high points and ruining my paint work all together.
I have spent a good while reading various articles on this from the web but none of them mention this.
When I did my scorp the clear coat was already very smooth so the problem didnt occur.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

The clay bar shouldn't remove any paint at all, It should only remove any residue etc on the paints surface :-/
What clay and method are you using ???

As Richard states the Clay Bar should only remove oxidised residues and NOT any paint or lacquer. especially if used with a lubricant such as soapy water ...

The bar I am using is a zaino z-18 clay bar and as a lube I have put about 200ml of mer car shampoo into a 1/2 litre spray bottle. The leaflet that came with the bar advised against using washing up liquid.
After I did the small section of the boot lid and dried it, the paint looked as if it had been T cut.
I then used mer polish with a coat of turtle wax (the paste in a tub).
Overall the desired effect was gained but I dont want to do any damage.
The car is in excellent order and the paint is good but I doubt it has been waxed on a regular basis.
As you run your hand over it your hand doesnt glide over but it kind of grips your hand. Not a good description I know but I hope you get the idea ::)
