Title: speed awareness scheme
Post by big_neil on Oct 27th, 2007, 9:50pm
i,ve just attended a speed awareness scheme at cramlington , north of newcastle. i was caught doing 35MPH in a 30 at haydon bridge and was offered the alternative of 3pts and £60 fine or no points a £67 fine and attend this scheme . i am always willing to learn so i,ve just done this course.incidentally my mate on cumbria traffic police said i wouldn,t have been done at that speed in cumbria as they tend to adopt the practice of plus 10% and 2 mph. hence 35 in a 30 and 79 say in a 70. every constabulary can apply theiir own rules in moderation and northumbria police seem to apply a zero tolerance in speed limits. one man on my course was done for 33mph on the same camera as me.when you see on video what happens to a child hit at 30mph and then at 35 mph the difference is frightening. apparently a camera is only put on a site where there has been 5 fatalities(govt. has now made it 4)
one man said that cameras were only used as revenue and it was pointed out that northumbria has 47 camera locations but only 12 are in use at one time and as each camera brings in around a million quid each year if they were for revenue then all 47 would be used at the same time !
these schemes are only used in certain counties and you only get the offer if you are just over the limit, any one doing 40 in a 30 does not get the chance , just the points and the fine.
it certainly opened my eyes and makes me more vigilant of my speed now especially in northumbria as i do a trip to newcastle at least once a month from carlisle .

theres a camera outside where i live, been there a few years now, i actually like it there cos thats where my cat crosses the road, but, i know theres only been 2 fatalities in the past 12 years, 50 yds down the road. dont get me wrong something was needed as people often used to speed down the road, now they only speed up the road as the camera is only set to face one way.
due to the layout of the road it would've made more sense just to put in 2 well positioned speed humps, something that the guys who put in the camera suggested to me themselves then went on to say the powers that be like the camera revenue.....

Bit of a mixed bag here from me, As a driver I view cameras as government cash points. However, I live right next to the A167 and outside my house its a 40mph limit, to get into my street there is a very sharp left turn next to a roundabout. Its one of those strange roundabouts where the main road has right of way, in other words drivers approaching it from the minor roads give way to traffic from the left.
So if I am travelling towards my house from my local city and whant to turn into my street when I indicate it looks as though I am indicating my intentions at the round about. So on almost every occasion there is a near miss. All of the local drivers have the same problem and there has been many rear end shunts.
If the powers that be wanted to site a camera near me I would offer that they use my front garden.
