Title: The Number 9
Post by Tons_of_fun on Nov 25th, 2007, 12:02am
This little nugget has had me pondering all day.When helping my 4 y/o with his 9 times table i noticed that all the answers added up to 9 ! For example...2x9= 18 (1+8=9) 3x9=27 (2+7=9) 4x9=36 (3+6=9) 5x9=45 (4+5=9) 6x9=54 (5+4=9),and so on until you get to 99 then it starts all over again.Anyone else noticed this or is it time to lay off the home brew ? ? ?

They are known as magic numbers, you can also have them in cubes where some of the numbers are missing and it is fun trying to work out the missing digits. ::)

The sum of the digits of any number when added together produce a second number.  If the second number is divisible by nine then the original number is also divisible by nine

As an example, the sum of the digits 123,456,789 (45) is divisible by nine and in turn 45 is also divisible by nine.  The year  2007 is also divisible by nine.

Cats also have nine lives except when attached to a Scorpio when they have just one.

ferret, its not, its not fun at all, drinking beer is fun, watching live bands is fun, cheering on your team is fun, watching final score and seeing that chelski have lost is fun, owning a scorpio that works is fun, albeit short lived ::),
but trust me on this;
trying to make digits fit in 'their' cubes is definately not fun.

I may have found the answer for which you all seek  ;)

I have vague recollections of this from my school years, but had to look it up again  ;)

The reason 9 has these unique mathematical properties is because we predominantly work in base 10 & it is the last number before ten.

If we worked in base 9 then the last number before it is obviously 8. If you multiply 8 by any number...i.e...3 x 8 in base 9 = 26, 5 x 8 in base 9 = 44, then it works in the same way as 9 does in base 10, in that all the answers add up to 8.

You can work it out here......http://www.cleavebooks.co.uk/scol/calnumba.htm

It is the same in all number bases....for example...put a number in the base 10 box...say 12 (2x6) & look up the answer in base 7...it is 15 which adds up to 6, put 12 (3x4) in the base 10 box & the answer in base 5 is 22 which adds up to 4  :)

.....I can't carry on anymore as my 40 year old brain has now reached it's max load & has reverted back to "who needs that kind of knowledge to survive anyway" mode  ::)

P.S....If there are any 12 year olds reading this thinking.... "duh"...... it's not that we don't know, it's just that we've forgotton  ;)..... :P
