Title: 3 year MOT exemption
Post by mindofitsown on Jan 7th, 2008, 8:59pm
Never having owned a car that is exempt from MOT for the first 3 years (yes thankyou to the string section of the orchestra) I wonder how many cars within that period would fail if tested to MOT standards. I've always wondered about this (re brake pads and high mileages these days). Anyone got data on this?

nope, no data that i know of, you mention brake pads, unless its changed in the last couple of years brake pads are not in the mot, brake pressure is tested not pad thickness, though obviously any decent tester would point out pad wear etc.

my mate who does mot,s has never had a three year old mondeo pass it,s first mot yet, most fail on seized handbrakes and the rear suspension falling out, when you think about it some cars can have very early faults and may not be picked up until the first mot, as i,m led to believe fmd services do not check over the brakes thoroughly until 30,000mls, we had a car in recently that was running rough and the cat was broken, this was just under two years old which is an obvious fail, how many more are out there?

I would suspect that the braking system , poor wipers, failed bulbs, cracked lenses, windscreen washers,   would be the most  likely candidate for a failure, as,  apart from accident damage  to steering, suspension Etc.,  everything  is well within the manufacturers tried and endlessly tested 3 year 30 000 mile Warranties.

my works transit covers on average 45k a year, so far we have had a clutch,2 sets of pads and discs an exhaust not to mention wiper blades, bulbs and a new horn (full of water) so heavan knows what the MOt would find !

In order for the manufacturers warranty to be honoured the vehicle must be serviced in accordance with their terms and conditions.  Decent main dealers should also carry out a VCR (Vehicle Condition Report) at the same time, therefore highlighting out any problems or foreseeable ones, whether they be warranted items or not.

ford give a three year warranty on new cars, but when the **** hits the fan you would be very surprised what that warranty does not cover,,,,,been there done that ! most other manufacturers do exactly the same ,they will not commit themselves on warranties ,ask them when you purchase the car what is and what,s not covered, a lot of it is not worth the paper it,s written on.
