Title: Is a corroded fuel line an mot failure?
Post by carmow on Feb 11th, 2008, 8:59pm
Not on the scorp' this time! i have a 1988 maserati Biturbo i'm doing up and the front to rear fuel lines (which are metal) are rusty, is this an mot failure? they dont leak and are secure, just rusty. Can't find it any where on the net.

Not sure but if rusty brake pipes are a fail then i'd guess a fuel line would be too..

Might it be an idea just to renew it anyway?
lt'd be a shame for it to go up in smoke after being restored ;)

MOT tester can fail corroded fuel lines if the corrosion is excessive - recall it happened on my Sierra a few years ago.
I was going to replace it with copper pipe but was advised against it - don't remember why though. Garage replaced it with steel pipe.

highlander, i know brake pipe is but on all the MOT web sites it doesn't mention fuel pipes, I think a stiff wire brush and some hammerite should do the trick. can't get the original pipes anymore and all my local factors have to offer is copper brake pipe, all be it large bore.

All i can find is this, which as far as i understand means as long as it doesnt leak its a pass..

"Fuel System

Any fuel leak will result in a fail. Checked under the bonnet and throughout the run of the fuel line from the fuel tank to the engine.

- fuel filler cap must fasten securely
- the seal in the cap must not be torn, deteriorated or missing
- no other defect which could cause fuel to leak out."

yes mike it depends on the severity of the corrosion, most cars in for mot,s have corroded brake pipes as a rule . but as the fuel pipes are under a lot more pressure they are gonna leak sooner or later.

well guy's, that's as clear as mud ! I'll take the easy option first and get the wire brush out and see 'what lies beneath'
what could be better than getting rush particles in your eyes laid under a car!

Sure is!
you then have the choice of laying there letting it fizz in your ear or try to jump up quickly and almost knock yourself out on the bottom of the car !

And we call this enjoyment?

An MOT inspector's eyes are attracted to rust like women's eyes are attracted to elderly millionaires with a heart condition.

Don't make it easy for them,  coat  the rusty bits  with  oil or grease or Hammertite,  they'll never notice. ::)
