Title: Fuel protest petition
Post by Pegasus on May 25th, 2008, 10:48pm
There is 1 about to close (17 June) with over 44000 signatories so far.

So if you want to add your name, click here (http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Lowerduty30/)

There's a few others going on as well here (http://search.petitions.pm.gov.uk/kbroker/number10/petitions/search.lsim?ha=1157&sc=number10&qt=fuel).

But some 'people' have been commenting on the value of these - worth a look here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/04/number10_visitor_stats/comments/ ) :D

Blimey, isn't the web a wondrous thing  :P

Unfortunately some of these people do themselves no favours - "reduce to an acceptable amount"?  That's a subjective figure at best and gives them leeway to set it to anything they think is acceptable (read: anything they like).  To be taken seriously, or as seriously as the government is likely to take a request to reduce their income, it'd need to be more specific about what is considered acceptable and explain how it arrived at that amount, citing sources of data.

I agree with the comment posted on The Register, quite simply, those that post these petitions don't usually have the full facts and therefore some of the petitions are unworkable or impractical.  That doesn't mean we shouldn't petition - the government need to know people aren't happy, but don't expect them to give much weight to how Joe Public thinks things should be done...

P.S.

FWIW, I signed the one about removing VAT from the fuel duty - I consider that to be specific enough for the incompetents-in-charge to know what we want done.
