Title: Please, Please, Please.......
Post by Jonnycab on Jul 25th, 2008, 3:09am
......Sign this petition to 10 Downing Street to abolish road tax on vehicles over 25 years old.

When this present government came to power in 1997, they promised to abolish road tax for any vehicle over 25 years old......& they did  :o...... :D

Unfortunately, one year later they had a change of heart & decided that only vehicles that were proved to have a build date before 30 December 1972 would be tax exempt  >:(......probably because the sale of classic cars suddenly shot up in 1997  ::)

My old 1977 MK1 3.0 Granny is usually SORN in the winter months, but come the summer months I have to pay £101 for 6 months tax, just so I can take it for a drive on the odd sunny Sunday afternoon. My 'classic car' insurance policy limits me to 1500 miles a year & last year I only did about 200 miles, so it's not as if I'm contributing hugely to global warming  ???

This government has to realise that owners of cars over 25 years don't drive them everyday. They are cherished items that they like to take out on a nice day, turn a few heads, then take it back home, put it back in the garage & put the expensive protective cover back on............maybe even switch on the de-humidifier & read it a bedtime story  ::)..... ;D

So if anyone feels that this petition is a just cause, then please cast your vote in the following link  :).......

P.S....If the government do decide to scrap road tax for any vehicle over 25 years old, then by 2019 the Scorpio will start to become a tax exempt vehicle  :D......that's if there are any left  ;D

The petition has now ended (9 Aug) with a grand total of 779 signatures......so I don't think it's going to be a particularly hot topic at the PMs question time  ::)

Shouldnt worry too much - When the gent named Cameron gets the Keys to No 10 the day after the next election, he's already put forward the re-introduction of the rolling road tax exemption as part of his party manifesto ( think the tories tend to all be classic owners too lol )

And yes, I cant wait to roll up in my scorp for my free tax disk either ;D

Ah,  poor  deluded  soul,    your   faith  in  Politicians  does you  credit  but  it will  be  sorely tested,  nay,  destroyed .

You really think they'll keep their manifesto promise ?

More chance of it happening with anyone else but the current bunch of car haters !

My XR4i will be 25 years old next April, so here's hoping  ;D
Hopefully it might have a running engine and some rot-free sills by then.

This one ? i think so :)

Especially as i've heard it mentioned multiple times on various occasions, and the fact that its a relatively low cost, popular vote winner as a large segment of the voting public either have, would like to have or would consider a "classic"

Add to this the fact that the re-introduction of the RTE is actually SUPPORTED by the larger green activists like greenpeace and Friends of the Earth ( as running a well maintained classic for many years would contribute about as much polutuion and energy usage as creating one new car ) the goverment is actually on a winner by GIVING us something ;D

Happy all round I feel :)

'Ello Jon. Too late, never noticed until tonight.

The Capri is 26 years old (crikey, is it that long?) in January, when I eventually get around to hammering the remains of the pistons out of the bottom of the block and getting it fixed up, it'd be really nice to think it was exempt as a classic :)

Regards,Bruce.
