Title: quality servicing or not? Post by big_neil on Aug 16th, 2008, 3:50pm we had a 54 plate astra in the other day for a service and the manufacturers running in oil filter was still on the car even though it had been serviced 5 times by a main dealer and the customer was charged for new oil and filters each time ! |

Had a similar thing with the Mondeo a few years back, my uncle had it serviced by the dealer from new, always had any work done no questions asked. By 2001, among loads of other stuff, he'd had them do new rear shocks twice and brake cylinders all under advice at MOT time...car had only done about 9k by then, it never went in for MOT without them rushing him a couple of hundred for something big. How they justified the new parts on a basically new car I don't know, he just used to pay up for whatever they said needed doing :-/ Year or so later it went in and he got a call saying the power steering pump was failing and a new one would be £750+labour ???. Got the car back 'serviced' but without pump replaced, when I went round to check it the oil and filters were filthy and nothing wrong with the pump except loose clip on the main pipe from the reservoir which I tightened and is still fine to this day. Big ruck at main dealer, car was serviced properly at least for that year. Now they (different dealer where I live now) won't service it anymore because it's too old despite a book full of FMD stamps, sent me accross to Rapid Fit who wanted nearly the same money, the guy there basically told me I'd be better off doing it myself and just taking it for the MOT. Problem I had with the Scorp was that the dealer just didn't understand it, the guys there were well outside of their training :-/. Needed a lot done when it came to me and I thought it was best getting it done by the dealer, cost a LOT of money which I regret parting with now, wish I'd done more with it myself at first. Alright for a young'n like me who doesn't need the car as a lifeline and can crawl under and change the oil, chuck the jack under to do the brake pads...if it's off road for a week it's a pain but no big deal. Getting an honest garage when you need one and need to rely on the car is hard now. |

Post by mr._floppy on Aug 16th, 2008, 9:20pm You gotta check whether the agreed work has been done before handing over your moolah. :( New tyres and exhausts are fairly obvious but to ascertain whether a Cam Belt or brake pads have been changed is a bit more difficult. Ask to see the old bits that have been removed. It may make you unpopular but who cares ? Don't get stung. |

Post by matt1987 on Aug 16th, 2008, 9:55pm i work at a main dealer as i can a sure you that when a vechicle comes in it get what needs to be done under a degree of importants. ie brakes, engine and exhaust get charge free fitting of bulbs and wipers and little odds and sods. i agree with mr floppy make sure the work is done before handing over your money. if you dont want to hand money over do it yourself on a sunday afternoon it will only take an hour or so. get those spanners out ladies and gentlemen. 8) |

Maybe that tar brush is a bit wide, no offence intended :) The guys at the Dovercourt dealer where we live now are good but still not trained for a car like the Scorp, they hit big problems when they did the autobox on mine. Whether or not because all modern Fords were transverse FWD or not I don't know but it took them a lot longer than they said (3 days turned into 2 1/2 weeks). Not their fault but understandably Ford probably don't train them to work on a low volume 10y/o car like the Scorp, problem I had was the two other autobox places I asked wouldn't touch it with a barge pole ???. Couldn't drive it far by then so it was either Ford or a DIY stripdown job in my unlit garage with a few hundred misc. springs and washers left over afterwards ::) Same with the Jag, I had it to the dealer once to get the ECU software re flashed. Really helpful people but took them 3 hours just to find the right program and to get it to work with the ECU because none of them had been asked to do it on that model of car before...had to ask someone from another dealer in the end who had worked there in the mid 1990's and remembered. Their product now is totally different to what it was in 1995, the entire design of those cars has changed in that time right down to the type of wheel bearing. So unless you're lucky to have someone who trained at the time those cars were under warranty, they're not going to know how to deal with it. Regards, Bruce :) |

Post by matt1987 on Aug 18th, 2008, 11:40pm hi that is ok i know from where i work (nissan) we dont touch the skylines at all it aint worth the time (all the mods people do with them) i can fully understand that you need someone who trained on them. today cars are a plug in, fault code, computer tells you the cure and off you go. cars are in the throw away world now you dont repair a alternator you get a new one. last week i had a new micra 7k miles on it careful owners never seen rain by the look of it, it came in as a non start in the end it was traced to a blow ipdm (intelligient power distrubition module) and ecu. it just a throw away world now. ;D |

Post by Jonnycab on Aug 20th, 2008, 1:27am My wifes cousin bought a brand new Mondeo six months ago & it has now been back to the main dealer 7 times :o It was always the same problem....every so often it would refuse to start & so ended up on the back of an AA truck & heading back to the main dealer. Every time he went to pick it up he was assured that the problem was fixed & wouldn't occur again, but it wasn't & it did :( On the seventh time, they rang him & said it was running fine again & he could pick it up. When he got there he was told...."Sorry it's back on the ramps, it won't start again" ???.....They had it for a couple more days until he eventually got it back & this time it really was fixed......& do you know what the problem was... ....He was told that the multiplug on the ECU wasn't securely fitted ::).....can you believe it took a main dealer seven attempts to find this fault :o. On the previous six attempts the car obviously started again just by chance & they left it at that without even trying to get to the source of the problem ::) It's not just total & utter incompetence, it also shows just how much some main dealers think about customer service & satisfaction.....about as much as a dodgy second hand car dealer does ??? |
