Title: BBC HD
Post by wbph on Jan 18th, 2009, 3:55pm
Just bought a super duper LCD tv, want the HD programmes but don't want to pay Sky the extra tenner a month to do it.

Was considering opting out of 400 channels of rubbish on Sky and going to the free BBC HD site. Been browsing the info available but there doesn't seem to be a conclusive pro or con. Would I get the BBC Freeview with it if I went over to BBC HD or do they broadcast HD only, which seems to be evenings only at present.

Any views anybody?

hi there

you need something to receive the HD signal with, be it sky (HD+) or virgin media (V+).

i think you might be thinking of the itv service on FREESAT. this is a free satellite based system (after buying the correct kit to receive it).

I have just bought the Humax freesat box and the only HD on it is the one BBC HD, there is no ITV or Chan 4 as yet. Freeview will get HD at some time but you may need to get another box. Sly have the best amount of HD channels but as you say another £10 a month is just to much, and to get the full benefit of it you need a big screen, over 32"min.

can i just elongate on WBPH,S queries.
last year i took the plunge with sky HD, the pic quality is absolutely stunning, all the sports and nat geog  stuff is in beautiful quality, well worth the extra tenner.when i took out the hd there was only 9 channels i think but now there is around 30 or so.
incidentally the BBC hd viewed thro the sky is i think superior quality to sky,s own hd.
another point i would make is if you intend to watch sports on hd a plasma telly is a superior pic to a lcd ,the lcd pic is not quite quick enough to catch fast action and a slight blur appears on ball sports .
if you want an even better pic with dvd,s i took a chance and bought a blu-ray player last year and viewed thro a plasma tv and listened to thro a 7.1 surround sound system is in another league again, dependent on the size of your living room and how well you get on with your neighbours.(it does make the floor boards vibrate)
i suppose every one to their own and it would not be everone,s choice though.

personally i dont think you can beat HD , ive got it through sky+hd , fantastic picture and sound
as for bbc hd , i can never find anything worth watching, i think the licence tax should be scrapped

Well, thanks for that, seems like there is no option but to pay up and look big and get Sky HD.

I would be happy to go without the sport and films, but my missus is a big tennis fan and if we lost the sports one my life wouldn't be worth living. I am quite happy playing on my computer while she is next door shouting at the telly when the footballs on.

None of you lot have ever had a Bang and Olufsen TV obviously. We've got a 42" Samsung but if you dont run a Blue Ray it is complete rubbish and I still prefer my Beovision which is 20 years old or more. It has had one fault which cost me £50 to fix. It was £1200 all those years ago and I have never seen a better picture anywhere, ever.
Only problem of course is that it's 28 inch - we call it the portable now...easy to get a good picture on a tube that size...or was it...only B&O did. Not many even came close.

Think the tube was made by Philips.

I think it's the old case of things of higher quality costing way out of proportion more dosh. You know, half as good, ten times the price.
The nice thing here though is the Scorp is the exception that proves the rule:
Twice as good, fraction of the price!

Blimey, just made meself feel good!
