Title: Buying stuff online Post by Jonnycab on Jan 28th, 2009, 2:41am It seems that the recession isn't just forcing High Street retailers to go out of business, but also major online retailers as well ??? Empire Direct, one of the internets biggest sellers of electrical goods has just gone into receivership, with thousands of customers who have ordered & paid for goods, unlikely to receive anything or get their money back, unless they paid by credit card. But how long will it be, in the current economic situation, before credit card companies start suffering because of having to reimburse their customers to the tune of millions ? :-/ Empire Direct did open a few shops, but as far as I'm aware most of their trading was still done over the internet. If a company like this, who rely predominantly on internet sales can go under, then any online retailer can go under. Especially smaller commercial sellers on places like Ebay & Amazon. I for one, as a consumer, am going to be very careful where I spend my cash online in the future :) |

Title: Re: Buying stuff online Post by peteHull on Jan 28th, 2009, 8:09am When the Big companies go to the wall then they drag lots of other supporting companies ie the suppliers of materials, transport, advertising services Demand for many things drop off etc etc it is a knock on effect which can only become worse because once the infrastructure of business is gone it is very hard to replace. Don't look good do it? ??? pete |

Title: Re: Buying stuff online Post by Scorpio_Mike on Jan 28th, 2009, 10:38am You're right Pete, it don't look good and things will get a whole lot worse. The UK economy is still crashing - we haven't hit the bottom yet - there is still some way to go. I have a feeling recovery will be a long, slow and difficult process. I don't want to start any heated political debate but I have strong feelings that a certain occupant of Downing Street has an awful lot to answer for. Comment I saw posted on a website the other day : Recession is when your neigbour loses his job. Depression is when you lose your job. Recovery starts when Gordon Brown loses his job. |

Don't know about you Rich....but if Gordon Brown was in the back of my cab, then I'd be hitting the 'extras' button on the meter everytime he wasn't looking.....& if he queried the extortionate fare, I'd explain to him that this is a 'Stealth Taxi' ;D |
