was talking with my old man yesterday about classic cars , and was wondering when / how / who decides when a certain car become classed as a classic ? is it an age thing?

Bit of a grey area depending who and where you ask but classic is generally over 15 years, antique over 25

It used to be that a car couldn't be considered a classic unless in was at least 20 years old, but nowadays some insurance companies will give classic insurance at 15 years  :)..........that means a 94 Scorp, later this year, may well be eligible for classic car status & insurance  :)

According to the DVLA any car built prior to Jan 1 1973 is a "classic" and therefore RFL exempt.

d**n the day they stopped it being a rolling date :-(

Cheer the day that gordo is swept into the trash by the tories then - they're re-instating it  :)

Be a looooooooooong time before any scorps hit tax exemption tho lol - although it does mean a large chunk of my fleet will become exempt..... oh happy (for a CHANGE) day ;D

they're a bit misleading with that though, according to that logic there will never be any more classic cars built after that date ;)

Bought a Sierra XR4x4 a couple of weeks ago - 1986 'vintage' so 23 years old - insurance came in at £102 for fully comp with 3000 mile annual limit - not bad for something with a 2.8i V6  ;)

Definately agree with the re-instatement of free RFL for anything over 25yrs old, especially as my other Sierra is now 25yrs old  :)
