Title: sat navs
Post by pagey on Aug 5th, 2009, 9:05am
Hello all. I'm thinking about buying one of those sat nav thingies and not being at one with technology too much, this is the obvious place to start for info.Don't really need one with all the bells and whistles that can be crammed into it just something to get me from A to B preferably with Western Europe plumbed in. Oh and perhaps one of those nasty revenue camera detectors.
Any suggestion?
Thanks.
Trev. :)

Its a personal preference really. I prefer The Tom Tom series as they tend to use good mapping software, although Garmin are the worlds biggest supplier, apparently. I have the use of both systems and prefer the tom tom, but they both work well.
You can get them with traffic hold up avoidance built in and the speed camera database, which is update able, and can also be obtained from HERE (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/) but you need to be a member to download the database, but as I said at the start its personal thing .. look around prices vary enormously.
A good map / Atlas is also a great help in planning!

I've only ever tried the TomTom, works great, simple and cheap, only "complaint" I have is that the battery life is very short if you take it on foot.

If its in the car no probs :)

hi  there

another vote for the tom tom.

it's ability to re-route quickly is excellent if the road has changed (using an older version on the PDA) with UK and USA maps.

So does this say the TomTom is better or just cheaper? ;)

The Garmin Nüvi 200-series I have gives superb value for money. I believe some sell them for like 79euros around here, probably even cheaper on ebay. Worked excellent for me when I lived in Germany and drove a lot in Austria, Switzerland and Czech Republic. If a turn is missed it calculates a new route quite quickly.

Another vote for the Tom Tom, had mine for ages very very good in unfamiliar areas, cameras good and also finds cash points / petrol stations in unfamiliar territory.

Only complaint is I can't make it get annoyed when I keep turning the wrong way deliberately. Tried this for hours especially when I first got it, but it will not swear at me....just says "Turn around when possible" like a parrot !!

I have a Navman S50 3D which I'm very pleased with - got it in Morrison's a few months back for £70 - very easy to use.

I got the cheapest one :)

TomTom one i think it is.

Or what you could do is buy the Ford VNR 9000 which fits the Scorpio and spend half your time driving around on uncharted roads using the latest 2003 map disc!  }{

Well I have to disagree, had 3 sat navs so far and the bast one was obviously garmin (somebody stole it from me, otherwise would still have it) it has the best maps and the most sable and efficient OS, any current garmin will do.
After the garmin was stolen I bought tom tom go 9xx, and it was pretty bad, despite being the top end model at the time (approx. a year ago), yes it's nice and easy but the maps are poor especially when you get around to go on holiday in Europe. Other the that the gps is slow and the antenna is poor. The OS as far as I remember on t was Windows Mobile which is anything but an advantage. Anyway, I only had it for like 3-4 months and went to get my money back cause it defiantly wasn't worth 700£ i paid for it.
Some time ago, maybe 5 months I got around and finally  bought myself a new gps  this time made by Sony the NavU90, and I must say that so far it's very close to garmin, it was cheaper then garmin, maybe cause i bought it refurbished, but is nearly as good. Maps are great, it's fast and accurate and even has Mick's house on it ;) WOrks great in europe with the maps you get in the box, it updates maps automatically when plugged to your pc, has the longest list of POI's i've seen, informs you by default about the traffic etc. The only down side that it uses windows as a base for it's OS though quite nicely lightened and configured by Sony so it doesn't annoy with it's freezes like every other win.

Anyway my classification so far is Garmin, Sony and waaaay down Tom Tom. But I guess it all depends on what you need as a user and how big your wallet is.
