Title: Scorpio breakdown
Post by Highlander on Aug 26th, 2009, 11:08pm
Broke down on the way to work this morning, alternator failed!

Battery light came on while on the motorway, Dash display showing 10v instead of 13.8 :(

switched everything electrical off (except wipers as it was torrential rain!) and thought i'd try to limp the final 20 miles to work..

Didnt manage it....

As i approached the large roundabout at Strathclyde Country Park (which is a main intersection for the Glasgow/Carlisle M74 so very busy at 8.30 in the morning) the engine died..

Not wanting to be Mr. Popularity for the next hour or so and abandon it in the middle of a three lane roundabout for the rush hour I did the honourable thing and crash landed it on top of the roundabout  in the middle of the grass :)

Now I carry a spare alternator (Doesnt everyone??) but looking outside at the rain i decided i would spend an hour on the internet while waiting for a recovery truck :)

Local recovery driver arrived 40 mins later and diagnosed faulty alternator in the torrential rain...

" Not a big job to change it, but I dont have one on me" he says..

I wish I had a picture of his face when I told him I had one in the boot he could fit  }{

Anyway, I said i'd be quite happy being recovered to my work and would fit it in the workshop.

All sorted now and waiting for the next failure :)

No, a 2.3 Estate I bought off Mr. Andrew (Arthur Daley) Higgins ;)

Although to be fair I have done about 9000 miles in it since i bought it  ;D

Exactly what you described happened to me on the A99 ring road autobahn in Munich from a speed of 140km/h. Shut everything down, at the end, even flashing indicators made the car jump. Limped a while, had 10km home, managed to pull out on a random exit and continued to drive. Where the car finally stopped I thought I was in the middle of nowhere, but voila, I was besides a garage workshop still open after 5pm. Can't say I got to hear nice things about the beloved cruiser from the mechanic. Charged it a bit and managed to limp home, last km was a pain.

You don't want to play with a bad alternator. Lucky for me this happened then, and not on the way to the Rostock ferry...

hi stuart

mind that's not my alternator. all the 'bits' came with the replacement engine.

and anyway, 9000 miles in 4 months! :o

I've only done less than 3000 in the mondeo.

What can I say? I ordered the powder coating equipment to arrive in time for when I was off work so that I could finally begin, only for it to arrive damaged. So by the time it's replacement is due to arrive I'll be back in work and back on the fast road to getting no where. But if all this wasn't enough being bored one afternoon I decided to strip down my Astra of it's exhaust manifold, cat, downpipe, thermostat, radiator, fans, header tank and so on, as you do.  :-X Actually, I had planned on do this eventually only not just yet! Oh! well. So far it's cost a fortune as I'm replacing all with new parts and as for this flaming rain it's ........... :-[
