Got this crazy idea, my car's previous owner has painted the gearstick surround in silver, which didn't look too stylish. He also drilled three holes on the topside and installed leds in them...

So I decided to do something about it, and bought a can of colour keyed spraypaint. I used some plastic padding to cover the holes and sanded it even. It's now drying, but so far the finish looks great after a layer of clearcoat.

Anyone else tried it (pictures)? Would be nice to get and idea of how it will look before ruining [worn plastic looking fakewood] with paint. Saw red trim panels once on an BMW X5, and that looked great, but mine is ash black so I went for that.

tlundkvi,good idea...as with all paint jobs..the prep work is the key to a good finish.when painting plastic on my mk3..i used plastic primer after keying the surface,you can then use gray primer on top of the plastic primer if you wish...and i have had no problems with flaking paint,or the paint lifting, :).

I started off with a piece (gearstick surround) already painted from before, so a lot of sanding is required, especially as the surface was painted from before. The other unpainted parts I believe are easier as the surface is quite even to prime. Will definitely continue with the other pieces, leaving the dash fascia last when most experience has been gained.

BTW, will the wood trim on the door cards detach, or are they superglued into place?

not sure if the wood trim on the door cards will come off without a fight,if its not clipped into place...it must be glued. :)

There's a tiny tiny variation in the colour though, but noticeable only when side by side with the car's own paint, which could be ofcourse the clearcoat or my lack of training. Would have popped a bit better out of the raven interior if my car would have been red or blue :)

Read the first post, started off with the gearstick surround that was already ruined (painted in silver) by the prevíous owner, liked it and continued on. IMHO it was either colour keyed or leave it as it was. I could have got a new wood trim gearstick surround easily, but decided in favor of colour.

If we all liked beige cars,all cars would be beige,if we all liked Heineken lager,that's all there would be ad infinitum !! variety is the spice of life,without it life would be drab,some people do all sorts of things which appear strange and indeed not to the taste of others.As long as we are not adversely affected by these seemingly odd happenings then live and let live,it really is not worth getting hot under the collar about,or even passing unkind remarks about ::)
