Oh well, looks like it's time to admit defeat with this car.
Just had the call from the garage that the scorpio has failed it's MOT.

Quote is £600+ for repairs, & after what I've already spent in the last couple of months,
I think it's time to call it a day.

I'll miss the old barge, as it's a great querky car.

What did it fail on?

if its just parts I may be able to help you out with some bits..

if its chassis corrosion then it doesnt look good :-/

I'll get the full failure sheet tommorrow when I pick the car up.

Off the top of my head, N/S sill, rear shocks, front anti rollbar links,
some other front suspension work, rear pads etc.

rear shocks will make up most of your bill then, new ones are a couple of hundred quid each..

you should be able to pick a pair of second hand ones up on the forum.

Sill shouldnt be too expensive and the rest are fairly cheap to replace..

I'd be reluctant to scrap it for that lot

Just finding hard to justify spending another £600-£700 on a car thats only worth around £700-£800
I've already had to have an injector pump fitted last month, new battery last week, & the fusebox looked at this week.

Plus there's still a few niggly bits to be looked at.
Tailgate is also starting to show signs of rust along the bottom edge.

id think seriously about getting rid of it , more so because you`ve spent a few quid already
i got rid of mine recently , and ive never missed a car as much as i miss my old scorpio , so much so that im even considering buying another one , just as a weekend motor . you only realise what great cars they are when you aint got one !!!

Right, got full list of failures now.

Front anti rollbar linkages worn
2 brake pipes corroded
rear pads less than 1.5mm
O/S steering rack gaiter split
O/S steering system has excessive free play at steering wheel
N/S seatbelt anchorage point has excessive corrosion.
O/S rear shock absorber has worn rubber bush.

Also had an advisory on the O/S seatbelt anchorage point.

The quote is £649 of which the N/S sill to supply & fit is nearly half the bill.

I've said to give me a few days to think about getting it done.
The MOT doesn't actually run out for another 3 weeks, so I can still use it. ;D

Well.... legally you cant! ;D

Failed MOT will show up on the database meaning the police can PROVE you are knowingly driving a defective vehicle as you know it failed the test yet you're still driving it ;)

Legally you should only drive it after a failed mot if you have rectified the fault.

I'd still drive it though ;D

If you get stopped by the police with a defective vehicle they can either charge you or give you a VDRN

Home office Website :

"If your vehicle has a visible defect, or one listed above, then you may be issued with a Vehicle Defect Rectification Notice. This has replaced the old unofficial scheme where in the case of minor defects the police used to give verbal warning to the driver and ask them to put the defect right.

The VDRN scheme is voluntary. It involves the police giving the motorist a form, which explains what the defect is. The driver must rectify the defect and submit the vehicle for inspection by an approved garage. The result of the inspection is completed on the form, which must be returned to the police within 14 days otherwise the motorist will face prosecution. Please remember that if your car is considered to be in a dangerous condition, you will get penalty points and could face disqualification.

Above all remember that it is you as the driver who has responsibility for putting the car on the road and the onus is on you to check that the car was in a roadworthy state before you set off on your journey. If you are found and charged with driving a car that is not in a reasonable state or has clear defects, you will be punished accordingly, depending on the severity of the defect".

BUT that doesnt cover the situation above, the DVLA database will show an MOT fail and list the failures..

Here is VOSA's response to the question :

"An MOT certificate is valid until its expiry date. However if your vehicle fails a test before this date and you do not rectify the defects then you are driving an unroadworthy vehicle which is an offence."

So to put this into context if your car fails the MOT due to illegal tyres then you are driving an unroadworthy vehicle, you were driving unroadworthy vehicle before the MOT, and you will be driving an unroadworthy vehicle until you get a new tyre. Therefore at anytime if caught you would be subject to a £2500 fine and 3 points per illegal tyre.

However once you get a new tyre your car is roadworthy and the old MOT is still valid until its expiry date, thus you can then drive your car again and get it retested to your timescale, with out worrying about driving without an MOT."

I dont know if the police WOULD charge you in that situation but they certainly COULD (if they've had a bad day) as you are KNOWINGLY driving a defective/unsafe vehicle and they can prove it.

OK. We have a bit different system then. MOT is valid in all cases at most to expiry date. If MOT fails, you get one month time to fix the problem+possible advisories. Only advisory, no need to re-MOT. However, if a failure is severe enough your car is declared road unworthy. For example bad cats = roadworthy max 1 month, no brakes = road unworthy.

All problems have a scale 0 = OK, 1 = advisory, 2 = fail, 3 = road unworthy.

Otherwise we have a similar principle.

& £600 seems to be the average.

Haven't got the spare cash ATM, so looks like the cars off the road for a while.

You mean 600 inclusive or plus parts? You will be able to shave off quite a bit though. Get the sill for tenners instead of 100+, used shock absorber(s). You could try with one of those one man shops in smaller towns.

All a little irrelavant ATM, as I haven't the funds for the work. :-[

The rubber bushes arent available seperately, its going to be a replacement shock :-/

Yep, and the doors are same as well for saloon & estate, so it would be extremely weird if the sills would be different.
