Had to get 4 new tyres for my car last week, I didn't realise that the fronts are a different size to the rears , they are slightly narrower and rotational. I originally got 2 spare wheels with her and thought I'd be ok for quite a while. However the 2 spares are both rears so I couldn't interchange them, I ended up getting four New and having the extra good ones put on the 2 spares. The scrap ones? one was down to the indicator and the other was punctured in the side tread area.

The next day I went back and bought one for my daughters Fiesta, (Yes, we are still a ford family, wife has a Focus) The Fiesta tyre was £50..... ??? I could have got her 16 tyres for her car, for what I had to pay for mine..... ::) ;) :-[ :-/ :'(

Driving the B really does cushion the blow though, and anyway, it's only money..... ;)

It must be the tight Scotsman in me but those kind of prices for tyres make me cringe! :)

I know they will be high quality and performance but....

Anyway I have a large stock of wheels/tyres so I wont be needing any soon ;)

Beware of the nosey tyre police lurking around your stock,enforcing destruction of any tyre over a certain age.I haven't seen em yet,but it would be yet another non productive jobsworth task,and another amazing government wheeze to get more Eastern Europeans off the dole,they wouldn't even need to be literate :(

6 year shelf life apparently. :o
3 on a caravan recommended as they don't get used much and can still look new after 10 years.... :-X I have had one blow out in transit and it is quite a startling experience.

I don't go for messing with tyres but at the same time I don't think they should be so expensive.

At my last school we installed some lorry tyres, half buried in the ground for children to climb on..... Ok you might say, Old lorry tyres? But NO! they have to be brand new tyres for H&S reasons, cost?..... Surprisingly just £100 EACH, made a GRAND play area of 10 tyres.... :( >:(

Something has to give soon..... ;)

Did anyone take the HSE bloke to task,maybe he or she,had been on a technical course relating to the degradation of tyre rubber ??? even to think that children could harm themselves on an old tyre is bloody ludicrous,we've all seen old tractor and lorry tyres that have lain in farm yards for twenty or more years,and are still perfectly OK for children to play on.Quite honestly all this old nonsense gets right up my nostrils,and so do the Herberts who preach it >:(

Same here Goz but when you have a job to do you have to comply with the powers that be,,, or the powers that can afford to be.... ;) ::)

The only way a tyre could be dangerous would be {} if there were steel wires poking through but they are easy to see. ::) I always say what about if someone sets fire to them, they were only in the play area. >:(

Some of the H&S is good policy ::) when it comes to risk assessing etc because it can uncover possibilities of danger and make users more aware, ;) resulting in less accidents. But slipping on ice for instance, I have to clear paths and put signs up telling people {} that it MAY be slippery due to Icy Conditions..... :-X
I should spend ten minutes each morning before I leave my home, doing a Risk Assesment on going to work.... ;D the first item would be, Will I pull a muscle when unlocking my back door,,, }{
Second one would be, Is there any ice or snow that I may fall on? }{ if the answer is no, I could carry on.... ;D if its Yes, I ought to turn round and go back to bed.... }{ }{ }{ }{

[] the situations you describe ,when we were lads ,were known as common sense,of which there is a marked lack,caused in part by the overkill of numerous 'authorities'.I was a regular fireman for several years,and though the manuals were there we relied mainly on adebtness and sensible judgement,since my time some of the most useful tackle has been banned as UNSAFE ! live carry down rescues are banned and the poor sods daren't make a move lest it be wrong,thus Britains number one emergency service is hamstrung.When I was out in town with Mum at a tender age,and tripped over a cracked pavement she would seize my arm doing her best to pull it out of socket,saying"look where you're ruddy well walking"this engendered common sense,today Mum would sue the relevant council ::)
All this because you talked about Beemer tyres ;)

Pete, not sure about that tyre directive on age to be honest. My latest Corsair (1938 miles from new) passed a current MOT test in May last year on its original Pirreli tyres which are 43 years old!

As for Dunlops, fitted a full set to my S Class in November and they were £270.00 each! the rears were 275 x 19" and not a good combination of sizes if you want cheap tyres! over a thousand quid for 4 tyres!!!! good job I have a few vans and can hide them through the books! :o ;D

my mates just had 4 on his M3,,,,,,,£1000 and his car is 5 yrs old ,another friend just put 4 on his two year old M3,,,,,,£1250, mind you it was a demonstrator when he bought it !so i suppose its ok then WHAAAAAAAAAAT? i bet they don,t spin the wheels much.

Just priced a Sidelight Bulb for my car.... £17.47+Gat and you have to take the front bumper off to fit it.... They (Stratstone) charge £75 p/H labour so guess who is taking the bumper off }{ }{ }{

Do I do the other side at the same time? Hmmmm

Pete....a mate of mine has a 56reg 7 series & had the same £18 quote for a side light bulb + £400 labour charge to replace it, which included removing the front bumper :o

He declined the dealers offer & did it himself. He managed to remove the headlamp & replace the bulb without having to remove the bumper, but it took him a couple of hours ???

With your experience Pete, I reckon you could do it in half the time ;)

P.S....do you remember the time it took to change a Scorpio side light bulb ?......a couple of minutes (including tea break ;D).....don't you miss the simplicity of it all ? ;)

Too True Jon, but Now I need stability in my life ;D The Scorpio didn't always deliver that and that was OK while I could crawl around under it. It is getting harder to do that now but at the prices you've just shown me there I know what I am up against now.

One of the BIG problems of course, with this car is the fact that it is so hard to find anybody who gets the greasy overalls on, they are mostly Very rich "Upper Class" ::) punters who own them and they just bung loadsa money at the Md's, the Md's look down their noses when I say I am going to do it myself. I say, at £75 P/H Diya think I'm Daft man.... }{ they get the point.... }{ }{
I have also, having got the new "Bulb" noticed that it isn't owt special anyway so what I'll do is cut the bulb out of the old one and fit a cheap replacement standard bulb in and replace the other while I'm at it.

I wish I had known before I bought the thing cos I could have done that with the pair of em.... ;) N'mind, we live and learn don't we?

I eventually got round to buying the new sidelight bulb (Known as Angel lights) 20 quid with Gat, was also told by MD that it would need bumper off and I declined their kind offer too.
I removed the Air box and undid the headlight mountings, pulled the headlight forwards and started to undo what I though would be the cover for the light, Turned out to be the motor for running the HL's so screwed it back together, then I found the bulb which is at the top of the h/l unit took off the cover which is a push and turn thing which gives access to the bulb, which is just an ordinary 12v 10w halogen bulb but is built as part of the reflector. I immediately, In my mind, converted it by cutting out the bulb and fitting in an ordinary pushin bulb holder in with araldite, probable saving in future £19ish. Fitted it all back together again and tested, Brilliant! Angel lights again and no more nagging from the dashboard.
Put in for MOT Passed no probs..... Sorted again, ;D
