Title: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by Jonnycab on May 15th, 2010, 4:13am Back in 1997 when Labour came to power, they abolished road tax for vehcles over 25 years old. Unfortunately they re-instated it a year later (everyone going out & buying old motors no doubt) & ruled that the vehicle would have to a 1972 or older ::) A few months ago, I remember one the Conservatives policies was to re-instate this Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles. But now that they are in power (albeit a coalition with the Libs), I can't find any reference to it anywhere ??? Can anyone verify this ?....or am I going to have to write to Mr Cameron about it ? And before anyone suggests......no, I wasn't drunk & it wasn't a dream ;) |

Title: Re: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by Conrad on May 16th, 2010, 4:51pm in ireland cars over 30 don't have to do the NCT (our MOT) and tax is 60-ish a year which is pretty cool. Sure beats paying over 1000 per year for a 2.9 scorpio |

Title: Re: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by Matt on May 16th, 2010, 8:11pm who pays a £1000 year??? uk 12month tax is £205 and mot's average out at £45 |

Title: Re: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by a900one on May 17th, 2010, 10:16pm £205 I thought it was still £185. Just checked , may have to sell one now, £410 for the use they get is hard to stand. |

us poor things in ireland that's who, sorry should have made it clear, but left it since i'd been talking about ireland. You want to know how much my insurance is? it'd scare you it's 50 euro for our version of the mot and there's huge waiting lists, if you end up failin it costs 25 to re do it, but if you miss an appointment it's 79. |

Title: Re: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by Conrad on May 21st, 2010, 2:14pm here have a look at this, let me know if it works, it shows the Irish tax rates our lowest rate is €172 for sub 1 litre vehicles, and the highest tax for a private car is €1566 for anything over 3.0 litres. a 2litre scorpio is €614 (i've got two of them, and a granada, and a bmw and a sierra, imagine if i tied to keep them all taxed?) 2.9 scorpio is nearly €1300 https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/staticContent.do?page=motortaxrates |

Title: Re: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by Mike H on May 21st, 2010, 3:20pm No that timed out However 614 euros (e.g. for me) = about £524, that's 2.5 times ours! Maybe we should think ourselves fortunate! |

Title: Re: Nil road tax for 25 year old+ vehicles Post by Conrad on May 21st, 2010, 5:12pm a little bit got cut off there dunno how, but wherever it just says "01" on the left, think 1001. 1101, 1201 etc. Yes in this wya at least you guys are lucky that you don't have the same insane tax rates we have. By the way, my insurance costs approximately €1750 nice eh?, the joys of driving a 2 litre car in your 20s in Ireland. it should "only" be about 1400 but i was on a trade policy before that since i was 17 so even though i'd years of driving experience, insured on that policy, (and a licence for that time too of course) they count it as none since i was getting a private policy. anyway it's gone quite off topic but i suppose back to the original subject, our one bit of luck in Ireland is that we have almost zero tax for cars 30 years and over and no NCT (mot) either, though 90% of the old cars that dont do the test are in better shape than newer cars because people actually love them and restore them |
