Title: Better than its reputation?
Post by faffi on May 31st, 2010, 10:35am
I read Honest John's report on the Scorpio and for fun looked up the Hyundai XG series as well since it's probably the car coming closest to our Scorpios when it comes to size and looks. John's report on the Korean product was a lot more favourable.

However; are you familiar with the site www.carsurvey.org? I had a look there as well and found these numbers:

Out of 63 XG owners, 34 were happy and 19 were not happy enough with their car to consider another Hyundai product. Or 54% were happy and 30% far from it.

Looking at the Fords, out of 73 Scorpio owners (1985-1998) 55 were happy and 7 were not, or 75% and 10% respectively.

Also taking the Granadas into consideration (1974-94), 78 out of 99 were satisfied and only 8 dissatisfied, or 79% and 8% respectively.

If we look at two other competitors, the Omega and Maxima, we find that out of 267 Omega owners (1987-2003), 70% (186) were happy with their car and 15% (40) were not about to go looking for another Vauxhall/Opel.

For the Maxima (1981-2009), the figures are a bit worse in that out of 752 owners, 60% were good about their choice and 22% would not want another Nissan.

Perhaps Ford owners are more enthusiastic owners? I doubt it. More likely, the cars in question offer more satisfaction for longer than the competition ;)

i agree with the last bit , since my last scorpio ive had a range rover holland&holland , really nice car had everything on it but just no fun to drive , and petrol well it still brings me out in a cold sweat thinking about it , after that i had a jag xj sport again another nice car nice to drive , pretty good on fuel but very uncomfortable for someone my size (6ft2) always felt stiff as a board after a fairly long journey , hence why im coming back to scorpio , to me the comfort and the toys you get on it make the best car ive ever owned , i think the lay out in a ford is the best of any make , yes it can have problems but so can any car and as they say the course of true love never runs smooth ....................................blimey that last bit was a bit heavy , no idea where that came from!!;-)

For me, the best thing about the Scorpio is the interior - no other car fits me this well. It's a very velcoming place to be. The second best thing is the exterior - I have loved the design since I first saw it when the car was introduced and I still haven't tired of it. Then you have things like roominess, overall comfort, good handling, silence. Not to mention that it makes me proud when I step out of it and happy when I enter it.

Nearly two years without one has made the urge for another one tremendous.

Really?

My mechanic bloke very often remarks on the comfort etc., he's a Merc fan but admits they're going downhill latterly build wise, think he's hanging to an older one that he prefers; ditto BMW (he says), I've had two 3 series in the past albeit old ones 2nd hand, very nice in their time and compared to what else was freely available, even so the Scorp deffo has the edge.

I agree with Rich I recently did a weekend to Doncaster, about 240 miles each way with just one stop (for grub), got out the other end fresh as a daisy. Even the Bee-Ems wouldn't have faired quite that well.

Yes I like the exterior as well, albeit slightly handicapped by the grinning radiator grill but overall based on the then American style for new cars, a fact which I only cottoned onto recently, but actually Ford were very farsighted, there have been more silly looking cars since (Smart anybody?)

The carrying capacity is huge, I like that the rear seats can be folded flat like the estate and I've carried timber, bricks, breeze blocks, camping gear (is what the previous owner had it for and Scorps were popular with campers); massive bags of gardening waste and even branches pruned off trees to the recycling depot. For the Doncaster trip I carried virtually a whole hi-fi stereo including 3 foot high speakers and an overnight bag and didn't even have to fold the back seats down!
