Title: Fishing quotas
Post by pat on Jan 14th, 2011, 4:37pm
Did anyone see the prog by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall about the amount of sea-caught fish which is chucked back in dead? Only politicians could come up with such an absurd ruling. He is running a big campaign to get the rules changed. Why can they not  simply count the whole catch against their quota? One thing puzzled me though. The skipper said they throw back 10 times what they kept. Is it not feasible not to catch so much in the first place or can a single netful exceed the quota? Don't know anything about the fishing industry(except that it is b-----y dangerous!) so sorry if this is a daft question.

Seems like I only heard half the story. Daughter was watching and tells me that the problem is when they are fishing for other species(in this case sea Bass). If they have reached their cod quota and cod gets caught along with the bass, then it has to go back. Doh-my mate used to have a saying, "before operating mouth, engage brain"! :-[
There still has got to be a better solution though. The fishermen can't just stop fishing for the rest of the year.
