Title: Adventures With Lamps Post by Mike H on Apr 26th, 2011, 8:30pm This started last Thursday with a headlamp being smashed by some moron who shouldn't be let loose in a car park without a refresher course how to manouvre in and out of a parking space ::) Anyway got another unit and thought easier (?) to just swap the glass and surround, as it's only clipped on (4 plastic clips). In theory ;D ~ still freakin' resistant though, problee not helped by it not being the same lamp unit that it originally came off of. It helps to loosen the mounting bolts so the unit can be pulled forward / wiggled about a bit. Also have to take off the inboard plastic cover ~ 3x torx screws, but found a screwdriver to fit. To get at the two clips underneath remove indicator lamp (sans foglamp). The handbook is vague ~ turns out the inboard end has a tongue that pops into a slot in the bumper moulding, so easiest recourse was merely to prise it free with a large blunt screwdriver, then it comes off in ya mitts.... To find it's a quarter full of water! http://livinginthepast-audioweb.co.uk/images/misc/huh.gif There's a crack in the top where the rain gets in. 'Cept we haven't had rain for weeks so maybe it was when I washed it last Sundee.... (?) Gaffer tape to the rescue (after pouring out the contents). Also treated it to a new bulb + squirt of WD40. While on the subject could check & WD40 all the other bulb holders as well. Which was something I was meaning to do anyway... Not that it matters since I dropped it and broke it trying to get it back in (why do the boot lid corner bulb holders have so little room to work in?), so it's reverted to a 5W from the spares |

Actually my gaffer taping could be better as well, seems the crack is longer than I first thought.... |

Appendix: the sans-foglamp version has the foglamp section with curved back reflector and everything but it's just blank at the back, no 'oles. One might convert it to work as foglight by making a hole for a bulb to go in if one was clever enough. ;D Which reminds me, I've got two 2-pin connectors tie-wrapped to the cross member in front of the radiator and doing nowt whatsoever, could these be front foglamp connectors does anyone suppose? |

Then this morning, Araldite a go-go.... http://livinginthepast-audioweb.co.uk/images/misc/indic-unti4.jpg Spot the repair? No OK about 3 - 4 inches of the top seam had split, with an actual little hole at one point, where all the rain water off the bonnet & wing goes straight in. Should be totally sealed up now like as new. |

Title: Re: Adventures With Lamps Post by Mike H on May 20th, 2011, 4:18pm Time will tell thanks, but assuming I didn't miss anything should be tighter than a duck's nether regions ;D Incidentally having had a closer look at the double lamp set-up (Lee's) I'm slightly bemused why the designers didn't opt to put it all in a single lamp unit like this one, it's so much smoother across the front as a single complete lens with no obvious joins. Title: Re: Adventures With Lamps Post by Mike H on Jun 2nd, 2011, 4:06pm Seems the Araldite is holding up. http://livinginthepast-audioweb.co.uk/images/misc/th_thumbsup.gif The blowing exhaust turned out to be extra long slots in the end of a pipe, bottom end of the cat I think; the joint had moved a bit exposing the ends of the slots. Mechanic banged it back together more and that is that. I also had a new ancillary belt on as well ~ NO IDEA when the last one was. Not in my time anyway and that's going on 7 years. Only saw it 'cause straight after it just happened to be parked in a different place to normally so's I could see it from indoors. My original Araldite repair hadn't gone far enough. Literally. Turns out the crack had gone all along the top and round the bend at the inboard end! Needed a magnifiying glass to even see it but it was there. Soapy water gets in no prob. Out with the Araldite again, hopefully properly sorted now! As suggested earlier, got a couple of little holes in the bottom just in case it isn't.... Larks, eh ;D |

Well it's tipped down like stair rods here last couple of days, just went out to have a look, nevertheless the interior is the driest I've seen it for a long time!
