Title: Crazy idea Post by pat on Mar 28th, 2012, 2:26pm Hi folks. It's a long time since I posted being Scorp-less but couldn't believe my ears watching the news. With the threat of a petrol strike, a member of the government(Francis Maude) is actually suggesting that people store petrol in Jerry cans at home!! >:( Is the man totally mad? ??? Needless to say, the Fire Service have immediately said NO NO NO! I've heard some crackpot ideas but this one must take the world's supply of biscuits. |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by Jonnycab on Mar 28th, 2012, 2:58pm I remember in 2000 when we had the fuel blockades & a story of a cab driver who attempted to store petrol in a plastic garden water butt.....doh !!! ::) |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by pat on Mar 29th, 2012, 12:55pm ;D. As you were chaps. Suggestion withdrawn. It's not a U-turn, you understand. They've just found that the firm who makes Jerry cans belongs to a Labour supporter. :o |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by leewar on Mar 30th, 2012, 11:33am I have also noticed that the price of crude is now at a six week low of $103 per barrel. Will the price at the pumps fall soon ::) I doubt it while idiots are stockpiling fuel at the current prices >:( |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by PJDavis on Mar 30th, 2012, 3:27pm I concur Lee! I notice that you correctly state the price of the crude we buy, i.e. WTI. Lots of people think we purchase at Brent prices, but that's what our crude oil is taxed on for export, hence the government getting a 'double-whammy'. The government keep saying that our prices are in line with europe, aye the price at the pump is, but our purchasing price on WTI is about 10p cheaper a litre than the rest of europe it's just our high taxes putting us in line! We should realistically be about 10-15p per litre cheaper at the pump than anywhere in europe. |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by Scorpio_Mike on Mar 30th, 2012, 5:35pm Agree - I'm convinced high fuel prices and extortionate parking charges are detrimental to the economy. Retail sales have been down over recent months, how many consumers think seriously about the cost of just going out to the shops - probably easily a tenner for petrol and parking before you set foot in a shop. When you get to your chosen shop they often don't have what you want. Online shopping much less hassle. |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by pat on Mar 30th, 2012, 6:51pm I see a lady in Yorkshire has now tragically been badly burned and is critically ill after decanting stored petrol at home from one container to another. Well done politicians. Do you accept any portion of the blame? No - of course not. Nothing is ever your fault. |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by pat on Mar 31st, 2012, 3:23pm All is now explained. A tory MP says that the use of the word jerrycan was a mistake. They meant the smaller green cans. So rather than a purpose-built metal, firmly-capped can, we should use a plastic, meltable, glorified milk container. Well that's alright then. It wasn't a crazy idea after all.....was it? |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by retiredjames on Apr 1st, 2012, 9:13am I live in York. Sadly, the lady who is now critically ill was transferring fuel from a can to a jug in her kitchen with the gas cooker on. This was to put fuel in her teenage daughter's car as said daughter had no money to buy fuel at the petrol station - to the best of my knowledge no fuel station in York has run out over the period and queues have been manageable. If the girl had the cash she could have got her fuel from a station without any problem. Much as we blame the government for many things I don't think they can be blamed in this instance. |

I also noticed on receipts for a couple of things I bought that their VAT is 8% Rip off Britain springs to mind! Tony |

Title: Re: Crazy idea Post by pat on Apr 2nd, 2012, 3:04pm Retiredjames. Thanks for pointing that out. Obviously then, it wasn't a result of the jerrycan suggestion in which case I agree that no blame for that incident should be levelled at anyone else. However , their handling of the broader situation has (in my opinion) been abysmal and their attempts to explain away Maude's original suggestion have been even more ridiculous. There's an old saying:- When in a hole, stop digging... :-X |
