Title: Roundabout lanes? Post by SteveO on Aug 8th, 2012, 12:11pm We have a new roundabout in town and it's causing plentry of confusion. I join at 1 and want to leave at 3. At 1, there are two lanes I can use to join. Exit 3 is a single lane. There are no lane markings on the roundabout. http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/ss211/stevework69/roundabout-1.jpg The problem is that half the traffic takes the blue car route around and the other half the red, leading to disputes as both try to exit at 3. Is there a correct lane? |

Yes, you can use either :) If everybody slowed down a bit, gave each other a bit more space and was a bit more courteous to each other then there wouldn't be a problem :-) I don't get the "this is my lane" attitude. |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by Simmo on Aug 8th, 2012, 12:47pm The answer is here (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070338) ;) |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by PJDavis on Aug 8th, 2012, 1:12pm Aye. What driving-Instructors teach is that everyone should be prepared to give-way on a roundabout. Rule-of-thumb is, if the exit lane is passed Twelve-O-Clock then you should be entering in the right-hand-lane. I used to instruct and examine Motorcyclists. |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by SteveO on Aug 8th, 2012, 1:50pm As there are no arrows or other signs I think this is 'an exit to the right' as defined below from the Highway Code as per Simmo's link. When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise •signal left and approach in the left-hand lane •keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise •signal right and approach in the right-hand lane •keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout •signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise •select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout •you should not normally need to signal on approach •stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout •signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by Scorpio_Mike on Aug 8th, 2012, 10:09pm Roundabout oddities... Anyone know the roundabout on the A53 ( Brian Clough Way ) ? Don't think there is anything else like it ! Right turn through the centre...obviously traffic light controlled. Another strange one is the roundabout on the A13 where you turn off to go to Canvey Island :o |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by leewar on Aug 8th, 2012, 10:47pm Matt, As driving is my job, it was an advantage to take the test and be ahead of others looking for work. Did mine in a 728i BMW. Tester said he was well impressed with the car and my driving :) |

Think that's going to happen anyway whichever you use. ;D Either make the exit 2 lanes or put better lane markings on the rbt. Which will still be ignored. ;D |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by Jeff on Aug 9th, 2012, 12:42pm Anyone enjoyed the experience of a roundabout with satellite roundabouts located radially around the central one at each entrance? There's one at Hatton Cross on the south east side of Heathrow. Not for the faint hearted, but in practice they work, just as long as everyone is confident. Obviously, women can't do it, but us blokes are fine with it. I suspect they were devised by a Frenchman.... |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by 5stud on Aug 10th, 2012, 12:36am over the last 20 years they have altered played with the cartgate roundabout on the a303 near yeovi this year they spent £1.000.000 making the lanes smaler so the artics rear wheels run up the kerbs and onto the grasse so next year they will spend more money making the lanes biger |

Title: Re: Roundabout lanes? Post by big_neil on Aug 12th, 2012, 5:30pm i,m with pj davies on this one, driving schools use the 12o,clock rule, anything past 12 take the right hand lane we,ve just opened a new northern by pass for carlisle and it has 9 roundabouts on it, as carlisle has never had any proper roundabouts before (just those silly mini gan ower the top ones ) it has caused no end of confusion with loads of letters in the local press from driving instructors asking drivers to get it right as pupils have often to go round twice to use the exit they want as others are in the wrong lane, many a time i,ve had to go round twice as the left lane is blocked with cars going in my exit, one young girl the other day approached in the left lane signalling left ,went right round 360 degrees and pulled off at the one she had passed twice,"doooh" you,ve just got to be prepared for the unexpected and keep in your own space but be very wary of what others are doing. |
