Title: Tracing a former car?
Post by SteveO on Oct 31st, 2012, 7:19pm
20 years ago I was the owner of a 2.8i Capri which I swapped for an XR3i when the kids were born.

The swap was made with a friend who promised me first refusal if he decided to sell the Capri.

He left the country to work in Holland 10+ years ago and placed the car with someone to tax and mot for him while he was away. He wasn't planning on being there more than a year.

Last weekend we met for the first time in years and got round to talking about the Capri. He's now lost touch with the guy he placed it with and doesn't know if the car is still around or not.

He's given me the log book from the time I swapped it all those years ago.

I did  DVLA enquiry and found it was last taxed in 2006.

My question is can I ask the DVLA if the car still exists and if it does can I get the present keeper details?

Are there any negative implications of contacting DVLA? The car is of sentimental value only.

Cheers,

Steve

A Google search reveals This (http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065303.pdf). Worth a go if Matt's suggestion doesn't help. :)

Thanks Matt, I sent the text and it says it was scrapped on 10 March this year. I will also try the previous owners form Simmo, just so my friend can try to spot the fella he left it with!

I'm disappointed I didn't try earlier as we'd talked about tracing it back last Christmas. It was my favourite car and I'd always harboured hopes of getting it back and on the road. It was the only car I'd ever sold as all the others had been driven to destruction(or crashed, same thing really I guess).

Thanks again for the help guys.

Steve

I'm just wondering what the DVLA enquiry website means when it says it can't find the car you're enquiring about?

Two of my old cars (my old XJ12 and my 2.3 Ultima) come up as 'vehicle can't be found', but there's no 'date of liability' or anything listed like if the tax had just run out, maybe they're now on private plates or something?

It can't be that they're SORNed because our Capri is currently SORN and comes up as 'date of liability 12 December 1996', basically the day the last tax disc was cancelled :-/.

Does anyone know?

Bruce.

Sounds correct - I scrapped 2 Sierras a couple of months ago and did a check on the DVLA website just to see what came up - nothing.
