Title: Save money...don't recycle it...Burn it
Post by Jonnycab on Jan 11th, 2013, 3:44am
This may not seem like a very ecologically friendly statement, but it is the truth  ;)

Alot of recyclable materials get shipped to China on super tankers (at great cost to the tax payer & the environment) & eventually, just end up getting incinerated anyway....including paper.

People spend hours every year shredding personal documents & any unwanted mail that has address details on it, for the sake of hiding their identity & personal details.

Personal shredders cost money to run & are just one more burden on the household budget in electricity costs.

They are bad for the environment, as power stations have to produce so much more energy to power these millions of little brutes that most households have nowadays.

The answer, in short, is BURN your paper. It's much cheaper & probably better for the environment as they'll still keep cutting down as many trees as they did before, & still ship paper to China (to be burned) on diesel glugging super tankers.

Okay then, enough of the 'what you already knew' stuff & onto the real reason for this post.

When your old washing machine gives up the ghost, before you leave it out for the scrap metal guy to collect, take out the inner drum. It is stainless steel (so won't rust) & makes an ideal burner.....much better than those expensive galvanised steel dustbins for £40 in Homebase.

To really make it something personal, design it with a bit of 'panache'  ;)

I used an old BBQ tray to catch ash droppage & my sons old mini trampoline frame (1 inch steel tube) as legs. I bolted it all together & mig welded all the joints for extra strength.

Cost of materials.....£0 (all fully depreciated items)
Labour time.....4 hours (inclusive of design idea & tea breaks)
Saving in shredder power consumption.....100%
Cost to planet.....alot less than shipping it out to China  ;D

You could probably use it as a patio heater and save on gas  ;)
So, will you will now be collecting old washing machines  ???

I was intending to use it as a decking heater as well for those chilly summer evenings.....there is something strangely captivating about the idea of sitting down with a few beers & watching stuff burn  ;D

Don't think I'll be collecting old washing machines though....I haven't got a flat back Transit, or a bell  ;)

P.S....the wife thinks it looks like something out of Wallace & Gromit  ::)

Thanks JC you have inspired me, I had an old washing machine in the yard waiting for the scrap man, the drum has now become a wood burner, not as good as yours though, mine is the low line series.   ;D
