Title: Road Tax?
Post by Daniel on Apr 30th, 2013, 8:36pm
Just wondering what if any other cars you have and the road tax for them. Sadly we don't have our lovely 24v anymore due to the running costs BUT the tax was 122 for 6 months. We brought a mk3 mondeo :-[ estate on a Y plate 2.0l petrol and taxed it today for 143!!!  for six months :o I cant believe the price and cant figure out why? anyone else get a price like that?

Yep, it's a bit of a b****r really with newer cars :-/

My '05 MG ZT160 (turbo'd 1.8 16v) used to rush me £255 a year.

My new bus costs me...wait for it...£485 per year...apparently that's punishment because I'm polluting the environment ;)

It would hold more credibility if it was still branded as road tax and went back to building and renewing road infrastructure, but as we all know it's now called 'vehicle excise duty' and goes straight into Govt. coffers.

And then, don't I already pay tax on every litre of fuel I buy? At least that's a fairer way of taxing, like pay as you go ;).

You get back to the fact that a lot of car manufacturers massage the emissions data to make smaller engined cars look really super efficient...I'm not trying to argue that the supercharged V8 in my new bus is gonna rival the emissions of a Prius, but I wonder if the difference in reality is as large as it is on paper..

My Aunt just bought a brand new Honda Civic - now it's a fine little car, I'm not knocking it. But on paper it's meant to do nearly 50 mpg combined, nearly 60 on a run...not so in reality - even if you hobble it around in 'Eco mode' (and believe me, I've tried), you'll struggle to see more than 36-38 mpg, a teeny bit more than I used to get from the ZT, yet the tax on the Civic is £70 cheaper per year.

Eh, went of at a bit of a tangent there, but at least it's off of my chest now ;D ;)

Edit: just realized how much like Jonnycab I'm starting to sound ;D

I have just taxed the EOS and the cost went up by £5 between them sending the renewal and me taxing it ???.  I pay £175 a year and it is doing app 50mpg each time I go out for about 20 miles, 38 to 40 on shorter trips.
Its been a bug bear of most motorists that its not on the fuel price for more years than I can remember, and I started driving in 1970 :o

Yup - one of the reasons why I stick to only buying pre 2001 cars.
