Title: MOT today on the Y reg
Post by amigafan2003 on Nov 26th, 2013, 2:42pm
And it failed - boo :-(

But only on front pads and a small bit of welding required on NSF inner sill (post-it size apparently) so yay :)

So, booked in for welding, I'll let them put on the new discs and pads I found at the back of the garage and whilst it's in might as well let them fit my new shocks and lowering springs :-)

Roll on (literally) Tuesday - pics when finished :-)

Did you go for the h&r springs in the end?

Yes I did :-)

Wonder if anyone can help - I have a Mintex disc/pad box set in the garage - part number MDK0016.  A search on the Mintex site confirms they should fit the 24v but it states disc size as 260mm - I thought the 24v had 278mm discs?

The h&r is a great set, got it on mine and had no trouble in the 2 years its been on

Yea 24v breaks are 278, sounds like you have the 16v brakes.

Ive upgraded to 300mm, stopps a treat lol

Yeah, the pads in the box are mdb1620  :(  I've ordered a set of brembo pads, I'll leave the discs as they aren't scored or anything.

Looks like I have a set of front discs and pads for a 16v for sale :-)

I need new shocks and springs on mine, what have you got on yours Matt??

Standard shocks with the H&R 30mm lowering spring kit.

Thinking of changing the shocks next year, nothing wrong the the current ones but they have done 100k miles now. Plus after ive found the KYB shocks to be of very good quality, ive bought several of them for varios csrs and they have always been a direct replacment. Plus they are well priced all 4 delivered looks to be less then £200

I think the shocks are the same across the Scorpio range but the spring ratings are different according to the weight of the different engines fitted.
I can dig them out [ Yes, a trip to 'The Shed' ] over the weekend and get the part numbers & I'll pick the brains of the parts guy at my local friendly FMD  :)

That's what I thought as well.

All done - looks a treat and drives nice - and the annoying clunk from the left had side has gone as well :-)  As soon as some decent weather arrives and I can clean it I'll put some pics up.

So Matt, tell me about this 300mm brake conversion ;-)  The chap said the rh front brake calliper was starting to seize - he's tried to clean it up but reckons its days are numbered - so may as well upgrade!

easy one lol

you need the brake discs off a Focus st170 as they are 4 stud fixing and you can use the calipers off a mk3 mondeo. i got mine from a 2.0 from a scrap yard for £30 the pair.

you'll need a small spacer (some 3mm thick washers from a prop shaft donut connection are ideal) between the caliper and the hub fixings to space the caliper back as it will hit the disc. and jobs a gooden!

Be warned however you wont be able to fit the 15" steel spare wheel over them anymore. a 16" wheel is the smallest that will fit

Cheers Matt - I think I'll go for that!

I've got four spare 16" 12 spoke wheels - it-s a shame one wont fit in the spare wheel well :-(

I ditched my 15" steel spare and got another 12-spoke 16" alloy with a 225/50x16 tyre - fitted perfectly into the spare wheel well on my estate.  ???

It's too high - if you know what I mean.

I wonder if this would suffice?

Carpet on Saloon lays flat with standard spare or has a wheel sized 30mm bulge with a 225.

OK, estate must have a deeper well & also under the carpet is a thick fiberboard type cover which still lays flat even with a 225 tyre.

I had a Mk3 Granada estate which had a steel cover over the spare wheel well - guess Ford ditched this on the Scorpio to save money & weight as the body panels were carried over.

That's it.  Wonder if a 205/55 tyre would fit any be better?

Just had a look at mine and was surprised to see it was at a guess about 20mm higher, turns out I’d put a 205 spare in it ::) It may depend on how good the under-carpet is. Mine has a thick felt backed carpet with a thinner felt under-carpet that has a stiff rubberised coating that has broken up – perhaps if that was intact it might have smoothed out the step. There’s also a wheel sized hardboard disk over the wheel that clips to the wheel centre.
