Title: Any Suggestions?
Post by Daniel on Dec 7th, 2013, 4:19pm
Hi all
My parents currently drive a mk3 Mondeo estate, but soon, they will be looking for something abit better. If they were to get another mondeo it would have to be a ghia or ghia x so its got abit more about it. I've been looking at the prices on the internet and they are abit high for what they are.
Any other cars to suggest?
It has to be an estate, not too bad on mpg.A scorpio 2.0, 2.3 or TD would be ok for mpg.
They would have another Scorpio but none for sale at the minute   ::) although it couldn't be a 2.9 or 24v due to the mpg.
So what do we think?
I was thinking if no scorpios, a smaller engine or diesel omega?
Dan  :)

Dan,
I hate to admit it here, but one of my other cars is a Renault - I keep it in France. It's a 1994 2.2TD Laguna Estate Automatic. Goes like a rocket and pulls a heavy load effortlessly with very good mpg. So, If you want a cheap estate I'd recommend them. There's also a very helpful members' website.
Bob.

Correction - The Laguna year is 2004. Senility is my only excuse.

Well my mom likes the laguna, dad not as much.
I did see the scorpio but they were not looking for one then.
Always happens. When they need one, none come up, when they dont  loads of scorpios  turn up on ebay ::)

My daily driver is a 2.0 diesel mondeo estate titanium x so is still as well specked as my Scorpio. Also it averages 42 mpg and the tax is only £170 a year the Scorpio is £220 a year.

I definitely think this is a good upgrade from a Scorpio.

All tho I still like to drive my Scorpio on a Sunday  :)

i cant stand the Mondeos my self, sorry :-/
I would like them to get a st tdci but there abit more than they want to spend really.
but the normal mondeos, I don't think get anywhere near the scorpio for ride comfort or toys. Plus you don't get that feeling of being in something different, its just a mondeo  :-[
To be fair the mondeos don't claim to be in the same class as the scorpio and the one they have is OK but it brings up that debate again as to weather we need a new scorpio or scorpio replacement, one up from a mondeo. They want a ford but the focus is too small, good granadas/scorpios are becoming harder to find so they are looking at other makes, like the omega, they even looked at a 75 estate, so surely we need something new to rival BM's Audis etc.  Somthing with abit of class agin.
Just like jonnycab said:

Reading that 'autoexpress' review, I must conclude that Ford are in fact run by newly employed, degree qualified lame brains, who cannot envisage anything being better than the Mondeo. Do these idiots not realise that the Mondeo name is now & always will be (in the eyes of the public) type cast as a reps/family car.

It doesn't matter if they give it the handling capabilities & luxury of the Starship Enterprise...it's still called a Mondeo & this in name will prevent it from becoming a rival to other companies like Mercedes, BMW etc top of the range models.

To be fair they bought jaguar to produce a luxury car but then b****red it by using ford parts on them the same thing they tried to do with saab.
It might save them money but all it did was bring jags down. When they bought landrover it had good vehicles that were reliable and a bit dated now they have been updated but are prone to headgaskets blowing every couple of years and propshaft problems. It seems that ford need to sort out their reliability and build proper luxury cars that look good and don't have the stigma of the mondeo badge.

What about a Nissan X-Trail ?
Its an estate and my mate had one with the 2.5 diesel engine which he reckoned did about 35mpg & they also seem to hold their value quite well. Useful in the snow too !

Have to agree about the Mondeo - don't do anything for me...also 'driven' from the wrong end  ;D

What about this one?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-SCORPIO-1996-ULTIMA-16V-AUTO-MAUVE-PURPLE-MOBILITY-CONTROL-NO-RESERVE-/271342435894?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3f2d44fe36

I think the 2.0 does a few more mpg to the 2.3

Sorry had a hard day and brain keeps freezing lol and yes they are spoiling the astons as well. Ford have no imagination and need to realise that to make a luxury car you need luxury everything including the switches and not put bog standard stuff in them.
