Hi all

Took my rear wheels off today to check the rear brake pads and noticed the tyre on the n/s wheel was worn on the inner edge, only about 5000 miles old and always on the rear.The tyre on the o/s is fine.

Noticed there was no balance weight on the wheel would this alone cause this to happen or could it be something more sinister.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Cant say what is causing the ware but the tracking on the rear is adjustable so might be worth getting it checked

Yeap Steve is more than likely right! theres a tyre place in my home town that does four wheel tracking, sensors on every wheel, very complicated looking. ::)

Jack the back up again and check for wheel bearing wear,grip tyre top and bottom and try rocking in and out.
Worn bearing will allow wheel to effectively 'toe out' causing wear on the inside diam.

If there is movement,first check that the wheel nut is Tight (200lb/ft). It has been known for this side to come loose as it undoes in traditional (anti-clockwise) direction!!

Incidently,its the first I have heard that rear geometry is adjustable?

If neither nut or bearing is the culprit then it could be down to wear in suspension components.

I wasn't aware the tracking option was available on the rears either....... but one learns something new every day so they say.. My first thoughts were has the car been in a bump wear on one tyre only would tend to suggest to me that the vehicle geometry was out slightly.. it is possible to check it but itsd long and complicated if you haven't got the jigs etc but that was my first thought...

it's a good machine and the tracking is quite a bit more accurate than normal optical .. but it isn't adjustable on the rear ..it just checks the setting ...to let you know if it's out ...

what they actually do is set the geometry of the front wheels in relation to the back ones whilst checking front toe setting. it is possible you have an excessively worn bush causing your toe out or your suspension is softer causing more camber on your worn tyre. geometry of rear wheels is set and not adjustable in normal use, you would have to move mountings to alter geometry of rear wheels.wheels sometimes can be set with little or no balance depends on your wheels casting and how tyre is manufactured over hundred miles an hour balance goes out the window lol!

There didn't appear to be any play in the wheel, does look like a dent on the inside of the rim, would this be a factor?
I am going to have it looked at tomorrow.

yup very good car seems to have relearnt settings still have fresh offside manifold and hego sensor too do,car seems to be behaving will check plugs on o/s bank see if its still rich at weekend not happy leaving original sensor though as that side had the misfire/blown cat hego must have suffered! is o/s manifold doable with engine in car,mechanic that did the favour said engine out?

HOS2 sensors are fairly indestructible but yep ..worth checking Ty .. and engine off its mounts for sure for the manifold ..OUCH ..you DO go where angels fear to tread don't ya mate .. :o :o :-X
