Title: Scorpio 2.0i 1996 misfire problem
Post by martinctb on Mar 20th, 2004, 2:17pm
Have just had the engine read and all the sensors are fine, ignition coils are firing, then we moved onto compression test first three great as you would expect from a 70000 mile engine then we can to the rear forth cylinder and nothing, the car is not smoking at all and the plug was dry no oil just a petrol smell. So as it looks the piston rings are fine. When the car is running there is a tappet knocking noise from amybe one tappet, so am i looking at cam or seized tappet anyone come across anything like this and how was it repaired also any one have a diagram of the top end of the 2.0i 12v 1996.  Martin

:)  Hi Martin,
I must admit that I'm not familiar with the 2ltr eng but one trick I learnt on the old  Ford 204E engine & head was this.
Remove the spark plug from the offending cylinder.
Wind the engine over till that piston is at the bottom of its stroke and is about to rise on its compression stroke. I.E all valves closed.
Feed into the spark hole a piece of fairly thick string making sure you keep hold of the other end.
When you cannot get any more string in,
wind the engine over in correct rotation direction slowly until resistance is felt.
Now the valves are held in place by the string, and won't fall into the engine when you remove the spring retaining collet .
Remove old spring.
Fit newspring use suitable tool to depress it and refit collet.
Wind engine backwards slightly.
Remove string.
Refit spark plug.
Job done.
As I said this may not work with your engine. maybe someone out there can confirm
Any way just a suggestion.
Hope all goes well, and it does save taking the head off.
Mick

Thanks mick
It seems that there are a lot of mechanics out there who just want service work and can't be bothered with other tasks contacted a few and i had varied answers most saying take the head off running up the bill the thing is im a trained engineer but out of action due to an operation i how have time to look at the head setup and with a right designed tool i should have no problems once the cam is off, so i've now ordered the spring and new tappet and will do the job myself.
