Title: ford scorpio 2.5 td vm engine problems
Post by liam on Mar 22nd, 2004, 1:20am
I have got a 1998 scorpio 2.5 td  auto
just had engine rebuilt after 2 cam followers collapsed.
car drives fine plenty of power and sounds nice on tickover.
only problem is when driving just before car changes gear there is an annoying ticking noise comming fom the o/s of the car under the bonnet, as soon as the car changes gear the noise dies off until the revs build up again.this noise is more noticable when driving under load but noise can dissappear when throttle is released slightly.
only other symptons i get is when i try starting the engine sometimes the engine will spin over and not start until you turn off the ignition  and try again it fires up no problem.
the other sympton i get is sometimes when the engine is started it sounds like the exhaust has snapped off at the manifold but the car still revs and after switching the engine on and off a few times the car will run nice and quiet .
can anyone help before i go to main dealers ???

could it be an exhaust manifold leak at the head .. causing ticking or worse until the metal expands and seals temorarily ? ....... STN .. otherwise sticking tappet on an exhaust valve < similar noises > .. until the oil and temperature cuts it in .. just thoughts ..see what the guys here think ...

thanks save!!!

i think the exhaust manifold is worth looking at as there is no misfire with the ticking  and it might explain the exhaust noise
cant understand why the noisey exhaust would clear it self after turning the ignition on and off a few times though   :-/

sorry liam mate ..I thought you meant quietened down after " running " the engine on and off a few times ..not just ignition < thinking the manifold would be expanding pretty quickly> ...... thinking cap back on then ..any more info you can give ? .... STN

hi save

i am still thinking about the manifold for the ticking noise and will look at it when i get a chance as the noise only seems to start  after the engine has been running for awhile.
these problems have only come to light after the engine rebuild they might have put an old exhaust manifold gasket back on (should have done the job myself really)
the other problems are so intermittenet its amatter of looking at them when they occur or getting the codes read and see if anything shows up there

problem got worst today
tempature guage went into red pulled over checked water it was empty but no sign of a leak
filled up system with hot water but it seems to be building up alot of pressure and blowing out past the pressure cap
looks like head gasket problem or worst
new head gaskeet was only fitted 1500 miles ago when i had the cam followers done
dont know whether the head was torqued properly
will find out tommorrow when i go back to the garage
ticking noise was possibly compression leaking >:(
